13, 14, 16, 21, 26, 31, 32, 40, 47, 49?
13. Where or from whom did you learn how to gif? I read tutorials linked on @itsphotoshop and I Googled some things.
14. How long does it usually take you to make a set? Anywhere from 15 minutes if I have the video already clipped and I don’t have to do much coloring and adjustment to it, to like a couple hours if I have to find the episode/movie/show, clip it, etc. Some have take a lot longer because I thought I knew what I wanted and then didn’t like how it looked so I went looking for different clips. Or like the 100 Rumple set where I just went into a fugue state and kept adding gifs until I realized I’d spent like 8 hours on the fucking thing.
16. How long have you been making gifs? About 10 months. But I’ve known how to do it for a while and I’ve been making other stuff in Photoshop for ages.
21. PSDs or original coloring for each gif? Original. I have used PSDs on rare occasion, but what I tend to do is look at the adjustments in it and learn from that so I can do it myself. Now I have my own PSDs for various things.
26. How many un posted sets are in your drafts right now? Uh… 9.
31. Do you schedule/queue posts or do you post right after you’re done? Both. If it’s post-new episode, I post right away because that’s what everyone does. Otherwise, for things like my OUAT meme, I have them in drafts and will occasionally schedule them or just post them manually.
32. What is your favorite tool/adjustment layer in Photoshop? Brightness and contrast. It’s the first thing I do, often so I can just see what the hell the frames even are when shows are so damn dark. It’s one of those things that every gif needs at some point. It’s so useful and gives immediate results.
40. Why do you make gifs? Because I can? Because there were ideas in my head just like for fics that no one was making. Not a lot of makers take requests, and when they do it’s for a specific scene, character, show, etc. What I wanted to make was stuff from all these quotes and things that give me feelings. It’s also kinda fun making stuff right after an episode airs and seeing everyone just die over their OTP feelings.
47. Any advice for novice gif makers/people who want to start making gifs? Keep doing it. Read through the tutorials on the photoshop blogs, look at your favorite gif makers’ blogs and see if they share PSDs or have tutorials. Don’t just slap a PSD on something and go with it, look at the layers, look at what the adjustments are doing and turn things on and off to see what they do. Experiment and don’t be afraid if you fuck up. It’s just Photoshop and there’s always the undo button. If you don’t post it, know one will know how hideous you made the thing look. ;) Don’t be afraid to ask questions of people who make things you like. A lot of gif makers are happy to answer questions if you’re nice and respectful about it.
49. How much would you say you’ve improved since you first started giffing? Um… IDK? From the first time I imported video into Photoshop, A LOT, but that was almost a year before I really sat down to learn the process and made my first gif. I don’t feel like there’s a massive difference between the first Rumbelle set I posted and now. It’s not like I first posted something horribly pixelated and choppy and hideous to look at. I practiced for a while until I thought I had something worth posting and that I would actually reblog if I saw it. I think small things have gotten better like my sharpening. I finally have a better understanding of Levels and Curves adjustments which has helped with scenes that are badly lit. I learned so much doing the 100 Rumple gifs, but it was all little things that I’m not sure I can explain.
