Thirty years ago today, on 15 June 1987, the graphics image format (now lovingly known as “GIF”) was created. An image file format developed by CompuServe Inc, GIFs were designed for efficient online transmission of color raster images and eventually evolved into a way of displaying short animations.
Although GIF inventor, Steve Wilhite, declared that the proper pronunciation of the acronym is “jif” (and was once quoted to say “Choosy developers choose GIF” in reference to the JIF peanut butter commercial), many people still debate about the “right” way of saying it.
So how do you pronounce "GIF”?
