Made some grass tiles to go with the road tiles
As an avid gamer with an inclination to appreciating art, it is the graphics that get my attention. I will literally stop playing a game and just stare at the tiles (or move the camera to look at a nice piece of 3D grass). Therefore, if there is one thing in pixel art that I want to be good at, it is tilesets. Almost all tutorials will tell you to start with a grass tile, so I did. Grass and I have a love/hate relationship.
The simple way is to draw some lines in a lighter shade of green or just place random pixels around. Voila, grass tile.
NO! I do not like this grass tile. How does that look like grass? It looks like random green on a darker green.
Well, turns out I am a form kind of person. I would rather draw little bunches of grass than go with the random approach. Personally, I think it looks better.
Despain, in his tutorial on Form and Light, says, “This is why pixel art is more like painting or sculpting: you’re working with a MATERIAL—pixels. Pixel art isn’t about your strokes: it’s about building.” This statement has changed my perspective and approach to pixel art.
