What’s one trope you wouldn’t write, except for money?

Oh, there are probably a few because I'm extremely picky about what I do write. Right now the first thing that springs to mind is "human/nonpowered AU"; I've read some extremely good ones, but it's not what I'm interested in writing and it gets rid of everything that appeals to me about most of the characters I choose to write about.

What’s the weirdest thing you’ve been inspired by?

you've seen canon right that's pretty weird

I think "weird" is relative and I don't really tend to think "oh, this is weird," but like, I did just put Donald Duck's WWII backstory into the Yonder Disney story so that he would have a history with Captain America. did you know that the "Donald Duck has a nightmare he works in a factory in Nazi Germany and wakes up glad to find he's an American IRL" film won an Oscar? that one's not on Disney+ for obvious reasons. anyway Disney made a bunch of WWII propaganda films and I think it would be funny for Captain America to have been in one (or more) with Donald Duck.

Do you have any words/phrases you use habitually?

YEP. not all of them are coming to mind but I know I've used the "it's me -- it's me" repetition numerous times for characters that have been missing or have just come back for the dead.

i think this one’s an old hunterism: whenever someone says “ore” i still have the kneejerk impulse to say “ore what?” it makes me annoying to play Settlers of Catan with lmao

this afternoon during a nap i had a dream that i was Five Hargreeves, but i had to pretend to be an *actual* child in order to infiltrate an orphanage (that definitely had Way too many guards to be normal), so i had to play up the “scared traumatized child” angle; afterwards i tried to teleport (myself and a woman who worked for the orphanage) but the teleporting wasn’t working right, it was just giving us mild super-speed. i have no idea what Step 2 of the plan was cause then i woke up.

Five infiltrating some kind of guarded Space Orphanage. Yes.

Outside of the vision scene in Gambit, I don't think I've ever written Maul, which is wild because I love Maul. I think the issue has mostly just been where he falls in the timeline (either the TCW or Rebels timelines) as well as the fact he's essentially a wildcard, which hasn't worked well for any of my big stuff to date (Gambit mostly deals with the legitimate big names in the PT, Backbone's pretty closed off). He's planned for Down in the Devil's Lair (Backbone sequel), All Along the Watchtower (Ouroboros 3), and the alt-verse in The Starry Crown (which is just the Watchtower 'verse, so it's the same Maul as in Watchtower), but I just never got to any of the points where he would show up with any of those three.

I can't decide if this means my own fic or if it's asking for fic recs, lol. (Me going "I don't know what this means" seems to be a theme with these ask memes and I can't tell if that's my problem reading tone or what.) I do reread my own stuff all the time, because I'm persnickety as hell and don't read SW fic, so the only way I'm getting stuff I like there is if I read it myself. I'm off SW at the moment, so I'm not rereading any of my own stuff except for Morning.

In terms of fic recs, I'm obsessed with A Question of Worth, which is a Thor: Ragnarok AU where Hela shows up about two minutes later than she does in the film. (Warning, WIP.)

friday: most self-indulgent fic you have ever posted?

oh, all my concept writing, for sure.  I feel sort of guilty about it sometimes, because while I do absolutely enjoy writing intricately plotted chaptered fic, I also really like doing concept writing. and also they’re all like...so incrementally different, sometimes, that I worry people are like “bedlam why is this fic with the exact same initial concept different than this other one with the exact same initial concept” even though they’re very, very clear in my head as being different. or if I write something and then immediately AU it, like I did with ryloth dream and hidden temple. it’s not the sort of thing that gets recced around and these days I probably have the same 25-30 people reading it every time, as compared to the readership I’d get with the things posted to AO3, but they make me happy to write and I find them soothing.  (that said, I have a few concepts that are too self-indulgent to post, which are mostly Extreme Hurt/Comfort.)

november: do you have any rituals or requirements for getting in the mood for writing?

yeah I have to be frantically thinking about being able to add something to my word count tracker before the clock ticks over to midnight PST (I’ve been word count tracking for the past few months and for various reasons I do a lot of writing between midnight and 3 am, which I do not recommend)

but other than that, no, and obvs that’s not really a ritual.  I’ve written in class, on airplanes, in coffeeshops, in my house, in my parents’ house, in the library (big chunks of the first half of Backbone and the back half of Gambit were written in the university library before my morning classes during my second MA), in friends’ homes, in line at Star Wars Celebration Europe, in hotel rooms on two continents.

god, probably some kind of weird HP thing in the old Fiction Alley Park forums in the early ‘00s.
