caroline remembers envy, remembers the way it used to taste. bitter and sharp. familiar. it was present there, sitting heavy on her tongue, anytime she looked at elena. it took dying to put it all into perspective. now all she feels when she looks at her is this ache, this longing for the girls they used to be before all this, even if the girl caroline was before was broken in so many ways she isn't now. even if elena was as much the knife she used to point at herself as well as the string that held her together.

“were you hurt?” there's nothing left to be jealous of, she thinks. elena, eternally the one everyone wants. only it means something different now. caroline does not envy that kind of wanting. “did they hurt you, @graveg1rl?” she's by elena's side in a flash, hands hovering, not sure where to go. would she break, if she squeezed too hard?
