Avery and Grayson (A Rant)
Now with the show coming I have been seeing a ton of comments and posts saying that they should end up together and I do not agree (everyone act surprised).
I will say this if you shipped them together or still ship them together that is not wrong this is just my opinion.
The comment that pmo the most is that "they would have ended up together if eve never showed up"
Did we read the same books? Even if Eve had not shown up Avery was still with Jameson and she was in love with him. Grayson was still struggling. Respectfully Avery is not Belly and she did not under any circumstances chose Jameson as a safety net. Choosing Jameson was literally harder for her- a gamble of sorts (will discuss that in some other post)
The only time Avery and Grayson could have ended up together was at the end of thl when Avery was ready to let herself want things. That still would not have worked out because Grayson was still not over Emily and was still blamed himself for her death and Avery very clearly wanted more than no strings with Jameson. The relationship would have been very toxic.
Let me tell you why-
1. Avery is an explorer a person who wanted to go everywhere and do everything she loves riddles and puzzles but all these traits were the ones she suppressed after hannah died. She made up walls around her and did not let herself want things.
2. Grayson is a person who likes control and he is more artistic person. Ge was raised by Tobias to be the perfect good family guy who protects everyone.
3. Both of them on the surface level are the same people who stop themselves from wanting things but at their cores they are completely different.
4. Sure, if they would have dated they would have been the power couple but there would have been no growth.
Because for Avery to grow she needed to let herself want things and for Grayson to grow he needed to be a person who could let loose and not be the protector which he cannot do with Avery because when they first met he was not really nice to her but after what skye did he became protective of her too.
Sure Grayson would have gone with her to travel the world but would he have done it the way she imagined? Avery and her mom made plans to explore each and every place they go to, but Grayson would have stayed protective and on alert rather than letting loose he would have not let Avery go explore without tons of security. He would not have made games for her to play throughout the cities they are in, for her to solve and be immersed in.
Don't give me bs reasons like what's the need to play games wherever you go- Avery likes to play guys remember in the start of book one Avery mentions the games she used to play with her how it was fun for her.
Another reason is Avery was attracted to Jameson like alot. She actively seeked him out and wanted to be with him even tho she knew it was a bad idea (she could not stay away). That kind of attraction does not simply vanish. The only time Grayson and Avery kissed was when she was about to spill a secret and after that her prime emotion was guilt. Meanwhile she quite literally initiated all of the Javery Makeouts in tig and thl.
Now for the main question. Did Avery like Grayson? The answer is YES she did, she found him attractive at the start if the book but did not like him because he was rude to her. She started to like him at the end of tig when he chose her over Skye his family he told her he would protect her and Avery liked that. She was hurt by Jameson after the wayback cottage thing and when someone chose her she liked that and when he told her that nothing can happen between them because 'he has seen the way Jameson looks at her'.
The reason he gave her meant that he likes her but is stepping back for his brother, and that pissed Avery off because she thought Jameson did not want her and only ever wanted to be with her if there was a game.
Thus she continued to like Grayson throughout thl because he wanted her but stepped back because of his brother (basically meaning he wanted her when Jameson did not)
But she still had feelings for Jameson and after reading her mom's letters she realized it was OK to love someone and when she let herself feel that she knew she wanted that with Jameson and when he told her he did not think of her as just a game and gave her the option to be with him she took it.
Now comes the controversial take.... The one that ragebaits me every time.
"OH, but avery loved grayson in tfg and she actively wanted to be with him but did not because she did not want to hurt jameson the way emily did"
How can people ignore the fact that Avery who has had all her firsts with Jameson and very clearly loves him think that.... she will not randomly leave Jameson who has also bery clearly shown growth and his devotion to avery. being a Grayson fan is one thing but not understanding Avery just because you want Grayson to get the girl is demeaning to Avery's character.
I have said this before and I will say it again Avery was NEVER IN LOVE WITH GRAYSON. she was attracted to him and liked him but it was never love and in tfg she loves him like he is her family and not romantically.
Where did people get that opinion- I will never understand.
Avery was concerned for Grayson during tfg because he broke down infront of her telling her about his pain and hallucinations how he liked her but could not let himself like her (Grayson is not a person who breaks down) so ofc she wanted to look out for him and be there for him because he let her in and she wanted to help because they are family now.
She probably felt guilty in way too maybe for not choosing him or maybe for not seeing how broken he was before that.
And when Eve came it was hard on Avery too she was Toby's actual daughter the guy her mom loved, the guy she played chess with, the father she soo desperately wanted on top of that Eve looked like emily the girl Avery was compared with ever since she came to the hawthorne house oh and also toby was kidnapped.
Basically meaning Avery felt like an imposter because Eve belonged there and Avery was the random wild card. Grayson let Eve in with open arms letting his guard down because she looked like Emily and he wanted to protect her. This made Avery insecure because he had not been easy on her when she first came to the house.
Grayson let Eve in and did not let Avery help him even tho he broke down infront of her (ik he pushed her aside because of his feelings for her). Avery considered him family and he trusted Eve even when Avery told him that she was not to be trusted.
And when Eve's reality came to light Grayson said "I owe her more than she thinks I do" this was him telling Avery she was the person who made him initiate his healing process.
And after Grayson said that we know from Averys inner monologue that a damn inside her broke, she let herself feel the feelings she had for Grayson at that moment and the ones she had before (meaning her romantic feelings for him were gone and now the feelings she has for him are not romantic)
The whole she is one of us we protect her thing gives me the vibes that mean Avery is family we protect her and she repeats those words to him too that his family is there for him.
Avery quite literally chooses Jameson throughout tfg not only because he is insecure and needs to know that but because she wants to be with him even when he tries to push her away.
Lyra is good for Grayson because she is not related to the hawthornes in a grand way and the timing they met is good to because now grayson knows he does not need to protect everyone and everything all the time. He had to protect Avery because he felt guilty as she was not a con woman he thought she was how his family tried to kill her, he felt guilty after what happened to emily thus he took her in as family. With Lyra he chooses her to be part of his family simply because he likes her and not guilt.
And for Avery and Jameson they love eachother soo much they know when to push the other person and when to just be by their side. They both understand eachother more than anyone on this planet. They are eachothers safe place. Avery loves Jameson knowing his scars knowing that he will feel insecure at times and Jameson is on Avery's side and loves her no matter what she decides to do.
So in my humble opinion Avery and Grayson did not make sense in tfg and Avery is not lying to herself ans respectfully they are not "right person wrong time" because they never would have complimented eachother.
