A note on Grigos - The Japanese name actually makes a lot more sense than the English one. In Japanese, they’re called “Grigori”, after the Slavic transliteration of “Watchers”, often thought of as one of the orders of angels.

This ties into both Brahman’s angelic themes (Kali Angel, Durga Angel, angel egg, etc) as well as the Grigos’ purpose as an advanced surveillance system.

Man, I love this post and have really enjoyed your analyses of the games (and intend to find them all again but it's 1am so bed must happen first). Syd is one of the most fascinating characters I've encountered in a game and going through the original GR again is mind-blowing. I'm staggered by the story-telling and how much becomes significant that was dismissed as minor before GR2. These games will stick with me for a long time. Your posts helped clear up a lot of questions I had at the end of GR2, so, thank you!

Hello ! I'm a big gravity rush fan and this comic you posted, gravity dream... IT'S THAT TRUE IS THAR CANON ?!?! IT HAPPEN AFTER CHAPTER 27 ?! Please Q^Q tell me it's true ! Dx

It’s semi-canon, I’d say. It’s called “Gravity Daydream” but it’s clearly intended as a conclusion, and you’re free to interpret it however you want! Since most of the people in that final scene are alive at the end of the game (or, in the case of the gods, may possibly show up again) then I’d say it’s definitely something that could happen after the epilogue.

Same Anon from earlier! Thanks for the reply. The fuzzy memories and Cyanea example definitely make sense, like deleting items on your computer without wiping your hard drive. Still, Bit's plan involving the bus and the whole "Grandpapa Zaza" nag at me. Very frustrating, since they've dulled real emotional development by creating an unneeded problem... Two other things: what was Raven's revelation during the duo-boss battle about Kat, and do you think we might see Syd in later (hopeful) DLC?

Her revelation was, presumably, something about her and Kat once being the same person (or being intended to be the same person by the universe but somebody fucked up and they ended up different people). But we can’t know for sure because she doesn’t tell us! Which is frustrating. Almost as frustrating as her telling the gods, “No explanations” when I would really appreciate some explanations.

It did strike me as kind of funny how matter-of-fact it all was though.

Bit (paraphrased): Ok, Raven. You and the other shifter were supposed to be the same person. Now go fuse with her guardian and finish this DLC.

Raven: Sounds good.

It does put her comments at the end of the main game in context though. Such as the “I knew we were connected” from the final boss fight. Since immediately beforehand Bit had brought her memories of the DLC back.

I’m not sure it’s ever going to be expanded upon. It just...is what it is, I guess. That was a plot point that also sort of came out of left field for me. If I had to guess, I’d say it’s a reference to “The Incal” - the Moebius/Jodorowsky comic that inspired Gravity Rush. In it, there are two sisters named “Animah” and “Tanatah”, who are initially rivals but eventually become allies, and who both guarded half of the titular Incal (the light and dark halves respectively). They’re treated as two sides of the same coin. There’s also a character named “Solune” (geddit?) who is also a sort of fusion of darkness and light. Lotta duality there.

As for more DLC, I’m honestly not sure. I would LOVE to get a glimpse at what Syd is doing all those times when he’s messing around behind the scenes. Toyama’s said on twitter that there’s no plans for more DLC, and if I had to guess then I’d say not, but I’m still crossing my fingers.

And if not, then I’m still planning on writing a boatload of fanfiction. :P Ultimately, I’m pretty damn satisfied with the story that we got. But I also want more of these characters.

Also, sorry if i wasn’t clear in my comparison to Syd - i wasn’t critiquing that at all, Syd is handled really well. He just definitely was sent into the past when he was revived the first time, considering the timing of his death and Kat’s fall. But Syd going backwards in time at that point is just a quirk of the story, it’s harmless and helps it along, it works, even if it’s weird time travel stuff. It’s not something that completely breaks the logic of absolutely everything, like what happens in Raven’s Choice.

OH! I see where the misunderstanding is. I viewed it as less, “Syd was put in the past” and more, “Kat took a while to fall, while Syd got a godly one-way ticket to Hekseville.” Which amounts to the same thing in the end. :) But yeah, the foreshadowing for all that was there.

I really did enjoy getting to see more of Raven’s past and the bond between Zaza and her, but the execution of this story just… did not work out.

Basically where I’m at right now. I like aspects of the DLC. And I’ll probably get less salty about the botched time travel plot points as time goes on. I loved Raven’s backstory. I loved that we got to see more of the creators (Bit is much funnier than I thought he’d be, and Gade is still such a sweetheart). I also enjoyed Lumino and Tenebria a lot, even though they really could’ve used more screentime...

Maybe I’ll just replay the Eto arc again to get the bittersweet out of my system. Because the Eto arc is probably the best writing in the entire series, and is an example of how to do a climax right.

I'm thoroughly dissatisfied with the timetravel. It can be done as a plot device, but they didn't do it well. D: And Raven's choice... didn't seem like a choice. It's like she's forced into it. T_T

I’m not a huge fan of time travel either. :/

However, I will say, one of the things I did like about the DLC was that it expanded upon Raven’s reasons for wanting to save the children. 

“Strength comes when you have someone or something you want to protect.”

That line from Syd is one of the central themes of the game, and it applies to a lot of the characters, but especially the gravity trio. But while Kat’s desire to protect, and Syd’s desire to protect, got a lot of focus in the main games (and especially the second), Raven’s needed more expansion. And that was the character development she got from the DLC. She became strong - became Raven - because she loved Zaza, and she loved the kids on the bus, and wanted to be strong enough to save them.

So it was a choice, but it was a choice much like Kat’s choice to sacrifice herself for the world. Or Syd’s choice to sacrifice himself for Kat and then support her from the shadows. It was a choice that she was always going to make, because of who she was, and what she valued.

The problem is that it also involved her losing that character development, which is inherently unsatisfying. Especially when it removes her knowledge of what she wanted to protect, and why she wanted to become strong in the first place. She does get those memories back, but it’s still unsatisfying.

I feel like the raven DLC would have been a lot better if they didn't release it months after the initial games release. I feel like it would have been a cool side quest but bigger than a side quest. Maybe made that whole thing the playable raven part instead of the 5 minutes we get of her in kat's story. It still has problems but I feel like timing is a big part of it.

I’m not sure. There are a lot of structural problems that building it into the main game or releasing it earlier still wouldn’t have fixed. And I’m talking about everything to do with the retcons and such. Having to retcon your own retcon is just sloppy, but they had to do it that way lest they have to rewrite the entire first game in a DLC/side mission, which they clearly didn’t want to do.

I think this is probably the...least disruptive option they could’ve taken if they wanted to do these plot points at all. But the plot points themselves make no sense.

Time travel is hard to get right, and this is an example of doing it wrong. Though again, I’m just happy that it was ultimately undone, with Raven getting to keep her character development.
