👀!
beatrice baudelaire blasting songs from "top 50 songs from the 70s" in the lobby of hotel denouement, volunteers meeting in secret inside horse drawn carriages seen all over The City because the most secretive place is right in front of everyone's eyes, black cat jumping down from attic of coffee shop and sneaking into alleyway to follow k snicket
if someone hasn’t sent ASOUE, Dracula!
No one has sent ASOUE yet, in fact, but I'll answer about Dracula so far in case anyone does (and because I’ve already talked about another part of the Snicketverse today, might as well tackle something else)
Favorite character: it's really hard to pick who I like best because there's a lot of characters I love, but probably Quincey. Look, I'm a simple woman, I see a charming brave cowboy who would do anything for his friends, I fall in love
Second favorite character: Mina is great both in general and for a female character written in the 19th century by a male author, even despite all the "I'm not like those New Women" bs. She's literally the brain and the beacon of the Crew of Light, and I will never not be mad at all the film directors that reduce her to a damsel in distress or, worse, an eager lover of the Count
Least favorite character: I don't think there's any character I actively dislike. I tend to care about Dracula himself more as an allegory than as a person, however, if it makes sense
The character I’m most like: probably Jonathan at the beginning of the novel with a bit of Jack. Yes, I am a wide-eyed nerd, yes, I am also a moody nerd with a tendency to shut myself away, I am multitasking
Favorite pairing: I think I can solve the difficult issue of choosing between Jonathan/Mina, Quincey/Jack, and Mina/Lucy by replying with what I've seen some other user refer to as "the Greater London Polycule", namely Jonathan/Mina/Lucy/Arthur/Quincey/Jack, namely what we and they deserve
Least favorite pairing: Dracula/Mina. I wouldn't care much if it was just a fandom thing - I am an adult capable of simply not interacting with fandom content with my NOTPs, but when it becomes such an integral part of official adaptations that people who haven't read the book assume it was there, it starts to get on my nerves
Favorite moment: it's a tie between Jonathan resolving to let Mina turn him if she becomes a vampire (peak romance!!) and Quincey's letter to Arthur (subverts the readers' expectations about the suitors in the cutest way possible and sets the tone - friendship, warmth, unity - for the entire novel)
Rating out of 10: my mind says 8 or so for all the period-typical racism, sexism, and ableism, but my heart says 10.
Jacquelyn in 2D
:Outfit Meme:
Olivia for the character opinion bingo please!!
You are getting two for one because I have Opinions!!
First of all, Netflix!Olivia:
Okay so obviously I adore her and not only is she super pretty but like... her outfits?? The leather catsuit? The half on/half off Madame Lulu disguise?? Impeccable. And yeah if she was real I would absolutely marry her ♡
I'm saying she didn't get enough screen time PURELY because I would have liked to see more of her, specifically more of her and Jacques doing their behind-the-scenes investigations, but I do apprciate that Netflix gave us WAYYYY more than required by the books so I am also grateful for the screen time she DID get
I literally think about her all the time and I just want more Content. Remember when she was like, 0.2 seconds away from decking Carmelita? Iconic. We deserved more Prufrock Shenanigans I think. And yes I still count almost slapping a child as having never done anything wrong because she didn't but also she would have been justified
Now... onto Book!Olivia:
Okay okay yes she sold out the kids to Olaf and I did hate her for that but HEAR ME OUT. I also like thinking about what fucked up shit VFD did to make her into this chronically people-pleasing adult. Like, she is desperate for everyone to like her, to the extent that we can't even tell if anything she says is genuine because she's always trying to say whatever anyone wants to hear. The only thing we can assume is genuine is her flirting with Olaf, because it actively pisses Esmé off instead of placating her like everything other things Olivia does
So did she have some specific history with Esmé? Did she even want to leave with the Baudelaires? Did she feel like she had no choice because she wanted them to like her? Or did she actually want to protect them, but wanted Olaf to like her too much to keep their secret? I am intrigued (but also accutaely aware that this reading of her isn't necessarily canon)
And she has absolutely been done dirty by fans. Look. I love Netflix!Olivia as much as the next gay, but the fact remains that book!Olivia is a really interesting character too!! And she's all but been replaced in fan works and posts and it makes me sad (I almost filled out "didn't get enough screen time" but that would PURELY be in relation to fics)
Honestly, Netflix!Olivia's biggest only flaw is that she should have been her own character seperate from book!Olivia so we could have them both
Olivia (book or netflix, up to you) 👀
She's the kind of girl Who'll smash herself down in the night She's the kind of girl Who'll fracture her mind till it's light She'll break her own heart ... But when, when, when She open her eyes, eyes, eyes Beyond the Chipping paint through the windowpane Lies, lies, lies Her patron saint, broken and lame
Patron Saint - Regina Spektor
i agree with your take on writing Jacques!! sure the show was pretty off-mark with him but writing a suave dumbass with depth is still a tonne of fun huh. personally i like to have him and Jacquelyn argue and tease each other, that’s my favourite part of writing with him
Yes, thank you! Sometimes the relatively simple characters can be the most fun to write, and it’s all about having fun, isn’t it?
hey mod i’m really sorry if i sound bossy or pushy but i thought i’d let ya know for the post where i whipped out the burial register screenshot you’ve got a few of the screenshots around the wrong way, thought i’d let you know if you’d like to swap them around, sorry to sound like a dick if i do
Thank you, I didn’t catch that. No problem, you don’t sound pushy or anything. I’ll fix it. Thanks for letting me know!
