JOURNAL ENTRY #5
"REAL OCTOPUS"
A few days ago, one of the Emillies left me her phone number and an origami octopus. We had spent an evening together but the problem was that I couldn't remember any of it and I woke up that night in my car pulled up on the side of the freeway. This afternoon I finally decided to call and ask her what happened that night.
I drove aimlessly for around half an hour in the general direction of the city. I stopped on the side of the road and wandered into a field of grazing cows. There were about ten cows in all. I wanted to get my thoughts in place before I called and this seemed like a good place for that. I sat on a big rock in the corner of the field so I could see all the cows and dialed the number.
EMILY(1 or 2): Carl, sweet of you to call.
ME: Thanks.
EMILY(1 or 2): Where are you?
ME: I don't know. Look, this is a bit odd but could you tell me what we did the night before you sent over the octopus?
EMILY(1 or 2): You did say you'd probably forget everything.
(I could tell from the voice that it was Emily1, the girl who works at the library)
ME: Yes. It seems like I have.
EMILY1: Well, we drove over to the library...
Emily1 went into a lot of detail at this point so here's a summary:
Emily1 doesn't like her boss, the library director. We broke into the library at night and stole the library director's pet octopus. Apparently it was "fun" and "hilarious". It was a small octopus in a small tank so it fit in the trunk of my car. We argued a bit over who would get to keep it but I let her have it in the end. I drove her home and helped her carry the tank up to her bedroom (where nothing more happened).
She went on to say that the octopus was doing something really odd in the tank that reminded her of me and that I "had" to see it. She refused to tell me what it was over the phone.
I'm going to visit Emily1 and this octopus as soon as I get a chance. I'm glad I spent time with her during my blackout but I'm a little worried that this sort of behavior is going to get me arrested.
