Album Review by Bradley Christensen The Audition – Controversy Loves Company Record Label: Victory Release Date: September 20 2005

I’ve mentioned about some stuff that I’ve gotten at Goodwill recently, but today I’ll be talking about an album that I got at Goodwill, just not recently. That would be on The Audition’s debut LP, 2005’s Controversy Loves Company. I picked it up awhile ago, and I did actually spend some time with it, but I never was able to review the album. I thought I’d give it another listen, as well as finally talk about it, because I got a lot of other albums from the era that this LP came out (2003 – 2009). The Audition is one of those bands that I have a weird relationship with, though, because they were a band that I definitely remember from back in the day, I just never really got into them. I had one of their albums, 2010’s Great Danger, and it was a really good pop-rock album, but I didn’t get more into the band’s discography, nor did I consider Great Danger to be a classic. I thought it had some slick hooks, catchy melodies, and some great vocals, all the while some interesting and clever lyrics, but it never stuck the same way that other albums from around that time did. Maybe I was more so into metalcore and post-hardcore when the album came out, because it did come out in 2010, and that’s when I was super into that kind of stuff, versus getting into alt-rock, pop-rock, and power-pop. I still loved a lot of that stuff, but I wasn’t constantly on the prowl for newer stuff to listen to. Anyway, I still own that album, so I could get into the album more if I wanted to, but I’m going to talk about their debut LP. Fun fact: Bob Morris, the vocalist / guitarist of The Hush Sound, was in this band, prior to forming The Hush Sound. He didn’t play on this LP, only on their first two EPs, which I’ve heard are more of an emo sound, versus the catchy pop-rock sound that they’re known for. Prior to picking it up, I had heard of this LP, though, but I hadn’t heard it myself. I was definitely familiar with their work, it’s just that I didn’t dive headfirst into it, even though I’ve always wanted to.

Listening through Controversy Loves Company, it’s an interesting case of a debut album, because it’s a very good record. It’s not even that rough around the edges, at least on its own, but compared to their other albums, you could totally tell that it was. This LP is a brisk, quick, and light half hour of pop-rock that’s armed to the teeth with catchy hooks, as well as a slick pop-rock sound that works very well. The biggest issue I’ve got with this LP, as well as this band as a whole (which might be why Great Danger never stuck with me), is that the album sounds very, very “samey.” It’s got some catchy hooks, but when every song sounds exactly alike, that can be a problem. It’s not a huge one, though, considering it’s only a half hour, but there’s nothing all that unique, interesting, or well-done here. It’s pretty basic pop-rock, but pop-rock fans will like this. Their sound might be quite basic, but there’s some effort put into it. From what I’ve heard, too, their later albums are better. This one is still somewhat rough around the edges, as you can tell the band is just starting to get comfortable playing music with each other, but they seem like a natural fit for each other. There’s not a whole lot to say about it, because this band doesn’t have that much of an identity to them, and that could be why I never fell hard for this band. I like what they’re doing, but they lack a lot of things that other bands around the same thing did, such as the clever lyricism of Fall Out Boy, the indie-pop / baroque sensibilities of The Hush Sound and Eisley, the experimentation of The Academy Is (Fall Out Boy can be included there, too), and lots of other pop-rock bands at the time. You’re not necessarily missing out on something super amazing with this LP, but at the same time, I would recommend it, because these guys are somewhat underrated.
