Plant of the Day

An impressive clump of Roscoea purpurea 'Spice Island' (hardy ginger) was flowering at the entrance to Great Comp Garden, Kent, UK. This herbaceous perennial has dark leaves with deep red backs and thick, deep red stems. It puts on the best display in semi-shade with plenty of moisture but good winter drainage is essential. The pink and lavender flowers will provide a display for over a month.
