The 2023 federal budget promises an ambitious national electricity plan to provide net-zero power from coast to coast to coast. The budget document notes that Canada's electricity demand is expected to double by 2050. Meeting that demand, the budget says, will require "massive investments" to ensure provincial and territorial electricity grids can support neighbourhoods where every garage might soon have an electric vehicle, and can supply energy-intensive industries like steel manufacturing as they switch from fossil fuels to electricity. To unleash those investments, Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland's fiscal plan offers a clean electricity investment tax credit worth $6.3 billion over four years, along with billions of dollars more for a suite of other tax credits and measures.

If you have a smartphone, you have received sales calls and seen online ads pitching solar panels. The calls to action make you raise an eyebrow. “Zero cost installation! Order now!” “Stop renting your power!” “Kick your power company to the curb!” Texas solar tech is too good to be true, right? As with any large home project, adding solar panels has its costs. Don’t let anyone fool you otherwise. Even those $0 up front deals have you paying on the back end. So it’s best to consider all the costs before you say yes to Texas solar tech. 

Cost and Efficiency for Texas Solar Tech

Solar panel prices have come down in recent years. According to a solar panel price survey completed this month, panels can cost as little as $150 for 370 watts of power. This comes to about 41 cents per watt. Most other models in the survey have an average price between 49 and 76 cents per watt. 

Typical homes need 16 to 20 solar panels, according to SolarReviews. However, larger homes that consume more energy need more. Just the panels alone can cost around $3,000. That’s not including other equipment or installation costs! So after federal tax credits, the typical cost is $12,000 to $17,000. Ideally, your lower power bills would make up for this cost. 

Efficiency for the surveyed panels hovers around 20%. Still, you would think making use of less than one-fifth of the energy that solar panels take in would be abysmal. However, sunlight is free, so nothing is really wasted. But absent solar panels, all of it goes to waste! Over time, technology will continue to improve. So expect that efficiency percentage to increase in the coming years. 

Texas Energy Reliability

Under a pilot program recently approved by the Texas Public Utility Commission (PUC), solar customers could improve the grid’s reliability. In this program, individual customers could redistribute some of their power back to the grid to help during peak demand. Experts say this could put 80 MW into the grid. Some retail electric plans already pay customers for sending power back into the grid. However, Texas law does not require all retail electric providers to do so.

Like this geothermal power plant in Iceland, the Earthshot Program will harness the power of the molten rock a few miles below Texas to generate cheap, practically inexhaustible energy.

The laws of physics prevent a perpetual motion machine from becoming a reality. Friction and gravity are impossible to overcome on Earth. But drilling deep into the earth could yield a near infinite source of reliable green energy. And the Department of Energy Earthshot Program is funding it. Public money brought us the sticky note, so why not cheap power?

Recent investments from the US government have spurred research into geothermal energy. Geothermal energy uses a constant and nearly inexhaustible source. The trick is to tap into deeper and hotter layers of the planet and transport that energy to homes and businesses. In the long run, this could lead to lower electric bills by raising supply.

Texas Geothermal Energy

A South Texas geothermal energy project is working on just that trick. The joint venture between Sage Systems and the University of Texas at Austin is taking place at an old oil well in Starr County. Adding to the existing well’s depth, a prototype well will go three to four miles deep. There, it will reach hot magma. This molten rock will give the heat needed to make electricity through a closed-loop system. 

Fluid will circulate down into the well and back up where the power plant facility works much like today’s power plants. However, there are no carbon emissions with this technology. The positives keep piling up! The facility will connect to a microgrid. This is just a smaller version of a power grid designed to serve a small area like a hospital or military base. 

Reading about this you may wonder if fracking is involved. West Texans have felt earthquakes scientists attribute to fracking. Methods have improved and no longer cause as much seismic activity as they did in years before. Plus, a new technique called hydroshearing slowly puts pressure on underground rocks rather than applying sudden bursts. 

The magma’s constant heat makes it more reliable than other green energy forms like solar and wind. Those forms of renewable energy must be used or stored at the time they’re created. But geothermal energy is always ready to go. This could be the long-term solution for the power drain from cryptocurrency mining. 

Geothermal makes up less than one percent of Texas energy sources. But if these research projects prove successful, that proportion could rise quickly. And solar and wind may be left behind. Old green energy would be replaced with the new.
