Pimped out my new apron for work. The one side is mostly blank cause it's going to be full of pens, and thus any design would be overwhelmed. I wanted to write "Freedom Is The Right Of All Sentient Beings" but it wouldn't fit, so instead it's "Freedoms Is Our Right". Still good, not exactly what I wanted but close enough. Also, puppy treats and #greenrings. Because I will be a safe space no matter where I am or what I'm doing. Period.

This week I felt alone and afraid. Any act of solidarity was meaningful to me, including “looking slightly sad.”

Wear the pins, guys. I mean, please be prepared to act on the promise, but wear them.

Ignore the negativity, I'm really proud of you and happy for you

Thank you for the sentiment, I do appreciate the solidarity.

However, I don’t think I should ignore it entirely. It’s stemming from somewhere, and what I have seen so far, it is legitimate concerns being expressed by folks who are angry- maybe at me, but mostly at the general state of affairs and the general reaction to such. 

Their reactions are not misplaced or wrong- wearing a safety pin, or wearing Green Rings is a small gesture, and one that is able to easily be used by people seeking to do harm. To some folks who have had it rough for a long time, and who are having it even rougher now, it isn’t enough. I feel that, and I agree. Just wearing a pin/Rings, if that’s all a person does, isn’t enough. The safety pin, the green rings- they are statements, and actions always speak louder than words.

I want to listen, and to learn what else I can do- not instead of, necessarily, but alongside of, because I think there are people for whom it will still matter and make a difference to. Doing this and doing other, more solidly useful things like donating to organizations that can do more than me (such as the ACLU), calling and visiting legislators in person, opening my home to those in danger, and educating myself as much as I can are not mutually exclusive exercises. I can do all of them. I can do more.

So, like. I’m gonna take what comes my way, listen to what I can, and learn as best as I am able. I will continue to seek to help out in all the ways I can.

You’ve probably seen this post about the green rings symbol- if not, go read it. It’s a symbol that you are a safe person in this time of crisis, that you will stick up for marginalized groups and help them if they’re being attacked.

This is a similar idea to the #safetypin, but that was recently co-opted by white supremacists; yikes (tw for racism, white supremacist/nazi symbols) The safety pin is still mostly used by actual good anti-fascist supporters, but yeah, that’s a thing.

Anyways, I uploaded the (recreated and larger) version of the symbol to my Redbubble; you can get it on stickers to stick them on anything, on shirts, and on drawstring bags, as well as other things; I recommend the stickers since they’re cheap and versatile, as well as on the drawstring bags so you can carry water and other helpful things in them to protests and rallies, and people can find you easily for help if they know the symbol. Shirts are more expensive but also highly visible.

If you can’t afford to get anything, you can draw the symbol on your body (in body safe ink), wear two green bracelets (one dark, one bright), or maybe even wear two green hairties. Try to make it visible.

If you choose to use this symbol, like the safety pin, you must be prepared to help people when shit actually goes down. You must be willing to stick up for people being harassed. Being a Helper and standing by when things are happening to marginalized people isn’t an option. You can choose to be non-violent in the way you help, especially if you can’t actually physically protect yourself or someone else, but know that physical situations will happen and you need to prepare a plan for those situations.
