How Michigan Schools Can Go Green: A Guide to Environmental Stewardship Designations
Michigan schools have an incredible opportunity to lead the way in environmental stewardship through the Michigan Green Schools Program. This initiative encourages schools to adopt sustainable practices and educate students about environmental responsibility. By completing specific activities, schools can earn one of three designations: Green School, Emerald School, or Evergreen School.
What Are the Designations?
Green School: Complete 10 activities, with at least two from each of the four categories.
Emerald School: Complete 15 activities, with at least two from each category.
Evergreen School: Complete 20 activities, with at least two from each category.
The Four Categories of Activities
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
Implement a recycling program for paper, plastics, metals, and more.
Start composting food and organic waste.
Encourage waste-free lunches.
Energy
Teach units on alternative energy.
Use renewable fuels or energy-efficient technology.
Conduct energy audits at student homes.
Environmental Protection
Promote Great Lakes watershed health.
Create animal habitats.
Participate in local environmental issues.
Miscellaneous
Host environmental speakers or events.
Celebrate Earth Day.
Maintain an eco-information bulletin board.
Going Beyond Evergreen
Schools that achieve Evergreen status can aim even higher by applying for the Green Ribbon School program, a state and federal recognition for exceptional environmental leadership.

Get creative with “Other Green Activities,” but remember to seek approval from your County Coordinator by December 1.
