But the key will be the interior running of LeGarrette Blount, who in the AFC Championship Game had one of his finest games as a Patriot because he showed more vision and agility. Some of us great players, we have a sickness about just trying to be the best, trying to be the best at our craft and trying to do anything we can to just be awesome and be elite. I think he has a sickness of just being very competitive and having that edge and just wanting that edge all the time and just wanting to destroy his opponents. I think from the outside looking in, you know he’s competitive. But when you’re here every day with him and you see how he works, man, it’s like, Wow, I see why he’s so successful because of how he approaches the game every day.

The Patriots had three big problems with their third-down defense last year, which slid from 12th in the league (37.1 percent) in 2009. They were last in the league in three different areas: conversions of 10 or more yards (31.5 percent) and 4 to 5 yards (60 percent), and had a league-high 35 third-and-1 situations. In ’09, the Patriots ranked 25th (24.1 percent), 11th (40.6 percent), and tied for fifth (21) in those categories.
