Curator’s Review. Issue #25: Gretchen Smith
Gretchen Smith "Sozo: a prayer installation in abandoned building in the midwest", 2007, installation in abandoned building with found objects, 12 x 12 x 12 feet approx.
This work by Gretchen Smith is an installation called "Sozo: a prayer installation in abandoned building in the midwest", which looks like a bunch of photo slides that are strung up on strings and hanging from the ceiling as if they were a strange version of the Christmas tree decoration without the tree itself. And next to them is a big box with an open top as if we are meant to cherry-pick these sliders and either put them in a box or throw them on the ground. The prayer here may be in a form of abode candle which we choose to keep or not to keep.
