Sure Greyhand was a bit of an ass but…
What honestly kills me is Greyhand seeing himself in his apprentices. And despite their differences, awkwardly attempting to mend things between them, despite his own views and values.
Like, him just randomly sharing that his stepfather was also a soldier, and that he also had his weird escapades out of the blue? Him trying to calm himself in the beginning because he sees himself in the very young Gabriel? Greyhand warning Gabriel every time he keeps disobeying him that he’ll never hunt again under his watch, yet putting it off until last? Greyhand protecting and letting Aaron and Gabriel always arm themselves first? Going in himself, alone, because he relies on them and knows what it’s like to go in unprepared? Protecting Baptiste and Aaron from being brutally murdered, and instead letting them run away? Him asking Gabriel to put Astrid away, and not taking action immediately despite the strict code of the Ordo?
Asking about Gabriel’s family, because yes, he still cares? Still trying to teach Gabriel a valuable lesson, in his view, and ‘accidentally’ letting vital information slip?
Him wanting to grant Gabriel an honorable death by his standards, because after all, he still considered Gabriel to have been one of them? And because Gabriel was still, in his eyes, his apprentice?
And the look of betrayal as Gabriel gives him no such honor?
