Rereading the books and I think Graystripe was given so much slack because Fireheart was in love with him. Why did he feel a pang of jealousy when Graystripe said he loved Silverstream. Why did he straight face mention no felt as strongly as he did for Graystripe.

Honestly, I'm glad with redux being so purposeful with their characters, especially Graystripe I won't see doomed meowi here.

See, I had the opposite problem, where I felt like everyone else was crazy. Or just willfully ignorant. Greystripe's EVERYTHING paints him as such a scumbag in such an obvious way, the only way (I felt) one could paint him in a good light is to deliberately ignore the flaws of canon and go with fanon instead (which, fairly, folks do often do in this fandom). I have been ready since the Redux days to point out his assholery to anyone unfortunate enough to even slightly turn their head in my direction, and I will continue to proclaim my hatred with any level of prompting until we all can agree that Greystripe is not a character worth liking.

you know what, i wanna say it. i'm really glad i like this Greystripe and what you did with him in this

i adored the first books and i know it's sort of in character for Greystripe to disregard the rules (chatting up with a kittypet isn't exactly something most clan cats tend to do) to have a crossclan relationship

but man i was just a bit peeved with his behavior in the books because like, i don't know if it's just me but attacking your home boy for a girl when they have valid reason to remind you that itCs a bad idea just rubbed me the wrong way and Firestar was too forgiving for that

People who have been around for a while are aware of my undying hatred for canon!Greystripe. To keep it short, you're right: Greystripe is a complete dick to his best friend and Fireheart doesn't ever call him out for it, nor is Greystripe properly punished for all the times he's selfish, rude, stupid and/or a blockade for making any progress in the story. He breaks promises, he's useless for anything but trouble, and the worst part is that the characters and narrative seem to think he's such a great, wonderful person who always put everyone else first and really struggled to make selfish decisions, when that's the farthest thing from the truth. It infuriates me. I can't stand it.

So it was extremely important to me that this version of Greystripe is tolerable, or at the very least salvageable. I wanted him punished for his bad decisions, and I wanted them to weigh on him afterwards. And I wanted him to be someone who actually does care enough about the people around him to try and make up for his mistakes, especially when they hurt someone. With that, too, I tried hard to make him likeable outside of his decisions - he's a big, casual, friendly guy who looks out for his comrades and can crack a joke in dark situations. It's not really close to how he is in canon, but I can't say I find that to be a bad thing.

Canon Greystripe continues to be my most viciously hated part of the books. Holy shit, I hate that fucker.

About Greystripe, you seem to dismiss the fact that he's potentially one of the most tragic figures in WC; he lost his mentor right in the first book, then falls in love with Silverstream who dies from childbirth, then one of his two kits dies in the following arc, he finds someone to love again only for her to get sick and die in POV, then one of three kits he had from her loses the use of her hinder legs and, you guess it, dies the arc after that. Honestly, his life has been a mess :<

Also, his choice to leave Thunderclan for his first two kits is understandable since he cinsider himself responsible for the death of their mother and wants to fix that somehow. Again, it might've been stupid in the longrun, but in that moment it made sense...

His life is certainly a mess, and it's his fault. He didn't have to fuck Silverstream after refusing to break up with her, get her pregnant and then presumably have her come over the border for the sole purpose of being there with her when the babies came, which couldn't have helped her chances of survival (there's literally no other reason she'd be there at the time). He didn't have to break the law, eat prey he should be giving to his Clan and then attack Fireheart whose only crime was trying to get him to stop breaking the fucking law (which he never apologizes for, by the way). He didn't have to sit around in the already busy nursery, staring silently at his kits instead of helping feed the queen caring for them. He didn't have to ditch the Clan for kids he had no rights to, prove to be an extremely useless RiverClanner, and then betray his new Clan (who took him in despite their [admittedly incorrect] belief that he was responsible for the death of one of their own), getting kicked out afterwards. He didn't have to promise to help Squirrelflight, immediately break the promise and abandon his Clan for no reason and for the second time in his history. Hell, he didn't have to join in on the final part of ALITM and get his stupid ass killed by ghosts because he's an old man who shouldn't be fighting anymore.

But he did all that, didn't he? No one told him to do any of those things. Those were all his decisions. I find no reason to be sorry for him when he's the cause behind damn near all of the things that happen to him.

And here's a reminder that every single character in this series goes through hell. Greystripe is not a special case. He's highlighted in the eyes of the fandom because he's a main character, and that's it. The difference is that he's had a hand in a lot of what went wrong in his life, whereas many, many other characters were innocent victims (for example, like you said, his own daughter) and were still better people than he is. The writers treat him like he's a grand hero and a good friend and a wonderful person, when their actual story, especially in the first arc, painted him as nothing but an incompetent scumbag.

There is a massive misinterpretation of his character that's widespread through this fandom and I fucking hate it. Greystripe was not a good person in the first arc, and the fact that his faults were never once acknowledged and he never grew or apologized pisses me off to this day.

Ngl, I kind of wish Fireheart had told Graystripe that he wasn’t going to keep covering for him anymore when Gray was being a dick to him in the first series. Fire is a devoted friend, but that gave Graystripe an out because he knew that no matter how much of an asshole he was, Fireheart would be there to back him up. And sometimes, the best thing you can do for someone is to let them suffer the full consequences of their bad decisions alone.

Fireheart should have refused to help him the second Greystripe actually attacked him over the whole Silverstream situation. Greystripe was nothing but an asshole about the whole thing. Fireheart didn't have to rat him out, but he easily could have just stopped making excuses or doing any of his mentor chores for him.

If it had been me, I would have passive-aggressively tattled. Like, someone asks me "Where's Greystripe?" and I go "You know, I'm not sure! I thought I saw him heading for the river earlier, but I could be wrong." Let the other cats track him down and get in his face for it. All I did was be a marginally honest Clan member. Whatever happens next is his problem.
