Formula 1 by Numbers - Grid Penalties

The new engine specification was brought in for the 2014 season, were the V8 engines were replaced with 1.6 litre V6 turbo engines. 

Honda/McLaren are definitely outliers here. However, the numbers are speaking for themselves. There is a definite need to refine the penalty system for engine changes. Especially when you take into consideration that some drivers where receiving a higher number of grid-places than there were cars on the grid (McLaren drivers had in-excess of 60-places at some races). 

It is worth noting that teams were allowed to use 5 engines per car for the 2014 season (down from 8 in 2013). This was reduced to 4 for the 2015, 2016, and 2017 season. The allocation was alter slightly for the current season, where engines are no longer considered as a whole; teams are only allowed to use 3 of each engine component, after which they receive penalties. However, this is the equivalent of 3 engines.

Why punish the drivers for shitty components? Penalize the teams instead.
