Have you tried working with more rigid structures and rhyme schemes or do you mostly prefer free verse poetry?

I have tried working with more rigid structures and rhyme schemes, and I do enjoy the discipline they can bring. But I think I’m naturally drawn to free verse because it gives me room to breathe, wander, pause, and let the poem find its own shape.
I’m also a little wary of the idea that poetry has to follow certain inherited forms to be considered “proper” poetry. So much of that thinking feels tied to colonial ideas of language, structure, and legitimacy. I’m more interested now in finding forms that feel closer to my own poetic roots, while still making the poem accessible and alive for the reader.
So yes, I do experiment with structure, but I’m most at home when the poem can move like breath, memory, or water :)
