Johns – Grift Marks (Peterwalkee)
A Buffalo group taking solid and direct aim at the west coast and probably more particularly the Hot Snakes/Night Marchers camp. I believe this is the debut from Johns, which lays forth eleven tracks of decently crafted rock of the aforementioned vein, possibly too slick for it's own good production wise...as they are apparently going for some darker, possibly gothier/post-punk, territory on Grift Marks, but is a bit too brightened at times by the recording. Some of it still works rather well though, like “Here Comes the Snake”, which kind of wriggles free of the poppy garage thing and actually sounds a bit sinister with a stray horn section wandering about throughout it. Overall though Grift Marks is a tight little record that could win over some ears that are feasting for this type of sound. Johns - Here Comes the Snake (stream) BUY IT!
