“   corny   !   there   you   are   !   i’ve   been   searching   𝐀𝐋𝐋   𝐎𝐕𝐄𝐑   for   you.   and   here   you   are,   ”   she   crouches   down,   scratching   the   top   of   the   crocodile’s   head,   excited   grin   filling   her   features,   “   getting   into   trouble.   ”   brow   furrows   as   she   pouts,   lowering   her   voice   and   staring   into   his   eyes,   “   now   WHAT   did   i   tell   you   about   talking   to   strangers   ?   even   the   beautiful   ones.   it’s   dangerous   !   i   worry   about   you.   besides   you   JUST   ate   that   dirty   pirate’s   leg   yesterday.   ”   she   stands   up,   looking   over   to   the   curious   girl   before   her,   “   he   had   these   pearls   that   were   to   die   for.   but   he   just   wouldn’t   hand   them   over   and   i   thought   to   myself,   𝐇𝐎𝐖   𝐑𝐔𝐃𝐄   !   i   asked   so   politely   !   and   well,   corny   here   seemed   to   think   the   same   exact   thing.   he   gave   those   pearls   up   so   quickly   as   soon   as   cornelius   shared   his   thoughts.   ”

dainty   fingers   reach   up,   playing   with   the   necklace   of   𝐃𝐔𝐋𝐋   pearls   she   wears   around   her   neck.   most   of   them   were   damaged,   but   they   were   some   of   the   best   she   had   seen   in   a   long   time.   “   they   make   a   NICE   necklace   though,   don’t   you   think   ?   ”   she   laughs,   offering   her   hand,   “   you’re   evie,   right   ?   i’ve   heard   so   much   about   you,   you’ve   caused   quite   the   stir.   ”

“   i   fucked   up.   ”   he’s   pacing,   can’t   sit   still,   mind   is   moving   too   quickly.   what   was   wrong   with   him   ?   he   shouldn’t   be   in   this   situation.   he’d   heard   it   a   million   times   over   in   his   life   —   do   as   you   please,   just   𝐃𝐎𝐍’𝐓   𝐆𝐄𝐓   𝐂𝐀𝐔𝐆𝐇𝐓.   he   should   have   known   it’d   all   catch   up   to   him,   he   could   only   run   away   for   so   long,   escape   into   his   vices   as   the   world   𝚆𝙰𝚂𝙷𝙴𝙳   𝙰𝚆𝙰𝚈.   that   wouldn’t   fix   this.   “   i   don’t   know   what   to   do   and   i   heard   that   you’ve   helped   people   before.   ”   pacing   pauses   as   he   spares   her   a   glance,   eyes   telling   a   story   that   his   lips   won’t.   he   has   no   one   else   who   could   help   him   and   he   was   going   to   DROWN   if   tossed   into   this   alone.

“   i   don’t   know   if   you   charge   and   if   you   do   i   don’t   have   much,   but   i’m   sure   i   could   scrounge   something   together   i   —   i   just.   .   .   i   need   𝐇𝐄𝐋𝐏,   evie.   ”   it   sounds   pathetic   and   it’s   not   something   he’d   ever   say   if   he   was   on   the   isle   but   swallowing   your   pride   was   one   of   the   lessons   they   taught   here,   right   ?   “   i   robbed   someone.   ”   he   was   sure   there   was   no   surprise   there,   who   hadn’t   done   something   wrong   when   they   first   got   here   ?   with   the   way   everyone   acted   it   was   practically   an   invitation   to   steal.   “   or   at   least   that’s   what   they’re   𝚜𝚊𝚢𝚒𝚗𝚐   i   did.   i   stole   my   stuff   back.   there’s   these   two   assholes,   won’t   get   off   my   back.   they’re   elitist   rich   fucks,   you   know   the   type.   they   stole   my   wallet.   annoying,   but   no   big   deal.   i   took   it   back.   ”

but   things   were   never   that   simple,   “   there   were   a   few   hundred   dollars   more   in   it.   he   wants   to   press   charges   and   i   don’t  𝙴𝚅𝙴𝙽   𝙺𝙽𝙾𝚆   what   that   means   for   me.   i   TRIED   to   give   the   cash   back,   he   wouldn’t   take   it.   i   explained   i   just   wanted   my   wallet   but   they   said   since   i   didn’t   report   it   missing   when   it   was   stolen   from   me   they   can’t   𝐏𝐑𝐎𝐕𝐄   it   was   mine.   ”   his   record   certainly   didn’t   help.   it   was   riddled   with   minor   infractions   but   those   started   to   look   a   lot   bigger   when   judged   by   a   court.   “   i’m   screwed.   ”
