Take the Edge Off: Grip Reimagines the Business of the Biz Card
The creative team at Grip just proved that a calling card can be a ticket to a one-night stand. I should have known what I was in for when I asked Kevin McConkey, Grip's principal, to design a set of MOO MiniCards. I just wasn't expecting this. But it's fun, I have to admit.
I have to ask, what the hell were you thinking?
Brainstorming took place over lunch and agua frescas. Our thoughts when creating the cards focused on the notion that we hand out business cards less and less. How else could these cards be used? Like most questions, we found the answer in human interaction. In this case, hooking up! These cards can be your wingman. Imagine yourself someplace and discretely handing over a card that is a) witty, and b) encourages a little naughtiness. We want you to be you, Maverick. Although the prior reference was masculine, these cards are decidedly gender-neutral. You go get some, girlfriends. Literally. We mean it. Go get you some.
Who at Grip will use these cards?
It doesn't really matter. What matters is who is hot! This is probably not the proper forum to reveal individual relationship statuses—that's what Facebook is for. These cards were not created for us, per se, but to showcase how the format can be thought of differently. Our goal was to demonstrate that handing out a card doesn't have to be about business, but getting bizzy.
What do you think of this small format?
We love the smaller footprint, and the whole experience of designing and receiving the cards is well done. Given our two books on package design, they had us with the packaging.
