Hello/ Up With Sports
Just thought I'd pop in with a word or two about what our vision is for the blog at the moment, although there's no guarantee that we'll stick to that vision.
We want to use this as a hub for putting together some coherent(?) thoughts on whatever pop culture nuggets we find interesting or worth talking about. "Pop culture" includes movies, music, TV, sports, and fashion. Yes fashion.
Why include sports?
During the triple-overtime game 4 between the Memphis Grizzlies and Oklahoma City Thunder, my twitter feed was blowing up, and not just with obnoxious #GRIZZPARTY tweets. The Grizzlies and "3OT" were the top trending topics in any domestic location, and every tweet on my feed had some combination of "Z-Bo," "THREE" and "durant" with a bunch of exclamation points thrown in for effect.
Except for Roger Ebert.
Acting as oases of placidity, Roger implored us to check out photos of treetops in a moonlit Minneapolis during the fall of 1983, mused about an Amazon review of a book by a bygone celeb, and generally appeared unaware of anything beyond his browser.
Of course, Ebert is a pop culture touchstone himself, but in this moment he appeared woefully out of touch, refusing to comment on the game or his lack of said commenting.
Sports are no longer the fetishes of short, stocky, slow-witted bald men, who still live with their parents. Collectively, professional team sports are a multi-billion dollar industry, capturing the attention and diversity of America. Athlete cross-over is at an all-time high and it would be foolish to pull an Ebert and act above, or, even worse, outside sports.
And Matt and I are huge sports fans, so there's always that.
