Above you can see my family’s groceries for a week (approximately). What we eat is different from what other families eat and these differences are a reflection of our different values.
Personally I would say as a whole, we have a pretty well balanced meal with proteins, carbs and vegetables. In the image, the four chairs represent the number of people in my family (dad, mom, sister and I).
Throughout these years, my family has changed what we buy and consume. One of the recent changes we made in our diet was moving towards the more organic foods. If you refer back to the photo, you can see that the milk we buy is organic. There are many debates about if organic milk is healthier but the main dissimilarity is that organic milk does not use additives and growth hormones for the cows to produce more milk. We as a family believe that organic milk is a healthier choice and therefor we have changed what we consume. Not only is it organic milk but also other organic vegetables. First of all, organic food does not only feed us consumers but also is healthy for the environment. With uses of no pesticides it is both safe for humans, animals and the land the food is grown on. One of the main advantages is that where organic foods are grown, the land could be reused and the soil is still healthy. Our family buys organic foods for these reasons and this is a small reflection of our consumer identity.
Also, we don’t only buy locally grown foods or local brands but instead worldwide foods. This idea of import and export is very important to sustain both economies. Whether it is a developing country or developed country, they both import something whether it is food or fuel. Our family, since we originate from India, also consumes some international foods. This is primarily because some foods that we eat are not locally grown and therefor have to be imported. This way, we are not only supporting our economy but many different economies.
In conclusion, I want you to think of what you buy. Do you really need it? Are you buying the right stuff?
Have Fun!
