What can you do with a Yearling?
Desensitize, sacking out. Standing and walking. See here, here,
Get yearling used to touching ears, lips, hooves, between legs etc...Touch the head a lot to avoid head shyness.
Teach yearling to put head down. Will be useful once she’s big and tall and for bridling!
Practice picking up feet and gently tapping to simulate nails. Teach a foot up cue.
Work on leading. Starting, stopping, backing, turning
Teach to lead from both sides, in front, near flank, etc...
Teach horse to wait (for gates, for food).
Practice horsemanship/equitation patterns on the ground.
Take walks, go exploring!
Set up an obstacle course of tarps, bags, cones, ground poles, water...
The beginnings of lounging. See here.
VERY short sessions in the round pen or lounge line
Carry around a saddle pad (after desensitizing with it first). Once near 2 years old, carry a saddle too. See here.
Faux cinching up a girth. See here.
Beginnings of neck reining. See here.
Walking onto bridges, plywood, etc. Will help lead into trailering.
Loading and unloading from a trailer
Teach yearling to be easy to catch in the pasture.
Poking spots that will get shots
Don’t forget to teach on both sides!
