Nobody in our current political discourse is so much as floating the idea of a second constitutional convention, but I for one think we are long overdue. We need a new document from the ground up, something that enshrines all the popular common sense policies our two-party system says we can't have.
Civil rights; race, religion, gender, sexual orientation
Voting rights
Universal healthcare
Protections to abortions
Gerrymandering ban on the state and federal levels
Direct democracy, no electoral college
Proportional representation, no senate
Jusicial term limits and independent appointments
Popular referendums for certain legislation
Campaign finance reform
Tax enforcement on the upper class
Environmental protections
Balanced budget
No private prisons, no penal labor, no death penalty
Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness
Liberty and justice for all
All men created equal
We need to get a grip on runaway capitalism before it kills us all. I honestly do not believe the United States as it exists today will still exist in 2030. Something's gotta give, and I fear it'll get worse before it gets better. We need to discuss serious systematic change now so we don't get caught with our pants down later.
There's going to be a major revolution in the near future, and I just pray it's from the left and not the right.
