The Four Nations
Water Nations:
Of the four nations, the Water nations are most closely tied to their past. Many still call themselves 'tribes' even if the Capitol decreed them otherwise, and the lesser populated cities of the north and south still function much like the tribes of the past.
The Water nations are seemingly the most independent, they require the least amount of supervision inside the cities. The ports, however, are closely monitored. All ships larger than a fishing vessel require explicit permission from Republic City to set out to sea and must be manned by either non-benders or benders that are taking regular doses of tethalene.
The main export of the Water nation is fish, followed closely by furs and other textiles.
Fire Nation:
The Fire nation is very closely monitored by Republic City, especially in terms of tethalene use. Known benders are subject to random testing to ensure that they are indeed fully suppressed.
The culture of the Fire nation has managed to flourish even under such circumstances, though at a cost. Many of the prominent families in the Fire nation have risen to riches through technological advances and strong business practices, while those that held to small businesses or agriculture found themselves working long hours for meager wages, hardly able to survive. The poor of the nation grew while the rich lived in luxury, somewhat like the people of Republic City.
Air Nations:
The nomadic lifestyle of those who dwelt in the air temples began to die out with the public practice of bending, but there are a small handful of secret temples among the sparse islands that still teach the ancient art. As a nation under the rule of Republic City, the residents of the islands found ways to survive, selling rare fruits of the mountains, fresh water from the springs, even reopening old ruined temples as vacation destinations for those that could afford it.
There are few air benders left in the world, but the descendants of Tenzin and Aang have done all they could to ensure the survival of the air benders. Even then, the Air nation has the smallest population, including non-benders. Each year the reapings occur, the world air benders are nearing extinction entirely.
Earth Nation:
The Earth nation adapted to Republic City rule as best it could, but in comparison with the other nations, they have held quite stubbornly to the past as much as they could. Still the world changed around them. Factories run by the Fire nation elite took over much of the open land, but at least the people of the Earth nation weren't without work.
People of the Earth nation continued to be hard workers, and have a lower poverty level than Republic City and the Fire nation, but the quality of living isn't what it could be. Still, most are simply grateful for a steady wage and no fear of going hungry. Bending, however, is considered shameful and the people of the Earth nation are quick to report anyone that they see doing so. Most of the benders that have been reaped are unskilled, ashamed of what they are.
Some of the elite families of days past, such as the Bei Fong family, still managed to gather a great deal of respect by shifting their focus to business, mainly tourism, fine textiles and art. The aesthetics of the Earth nation are in high demand in modern culture, esteemed by the people of Republic City, though the fashions change with the season.
