Group Processes - why do people act the way they do?
Individuals act in relation to norm formation, and three goals that underly human behaviour 1. the goal to be liked or have relationship (normative) 2. the need to be correct and effectively accurate (informational) 3. The need to maintain your self concept. However, these three goals may also act in conflict and or interrelation with each other. This is the role of norm saliance. Thos who are sceptical about the ability of social norms to reliably account for behaviour (Darley and Latente) (1970) have noted that a vareity of social norms may apply to any specific situation, some of which are mututally compatible. e.g individuals act with environment. Therefore, the various forms of influence (Conforming: 'giving in to group pressure'. cosists of majority/minority influence Sherif/Asch/Moscovici/Crutchfield/Zimbardo) and Obedience (Milgram). are affected by different underlying factors stated above.
