We're watching the 2002 Brazilian film City of God in my discord server on wednesday! DM me for an invite if you're cool!
Overview courtesy of @eintheology:
On the surface level, City of God is relatively easy to summarize. It's a Dickensian crime drama about life in and among the people of the City of God, a notorious slum of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The themes and message of the film are harder to summarize. It's a film that contains multitudes. It's epic, it's novelistic, it's tender, it's brutal, it's about kindness, it's about carelessness, it's wise and foolish and heartfelt and heartless. It portrays the sufferings of poverty and strife with the urgency and moral clarity of a hurt child, one who feels injustice all the more keenly for their inexperience. It speaks with the voice of one who does not know what is right, but who can see and feel the wrongness of what is about them, although they can do but little to help it. It has a protagonist, a child of the titular City of God, but in some sense the true viewpoint seems to be that of the city itself, as it feels and feeds on the travails of its residents.
