HISTORY;
FORTUNE WAS named as such because she was a miracle to her daddy. She thought her name was as cheesy as a grilled cheese on rye but she got used to it. She figured there were worse things to be called. But despite her name, she wasn’t very fortunate. She was only ten years old when she learned that her momma had been real sick for a while and it wasn’t looking good. Up until that point she had no clue about it and her daddy swore it was for her protection. She was too young to understand the severity of the situation and she lashed out, swore that she’d never speak to her daddy again. But he soldiered on, shouldering the brunt of his family’s problems like he always did. Unfortunately this caused Fortune to become less trusting of a person and pull inside herself.
It didn’t take long for her momma to get sicker and soon Fortune found herself in an unfortunate predicament. The Nott’s didn’t have a whole lot of money and the small hospital’s doctors weren’t well versed in cancer, especially not the fast moving kind Fortune’s momma had contracted. So using what little money they had, the Nott’s packed up to the nearest hospital that could help her. It was hard, to say the least, constantly driving for miles to and from the hospital. Fortune ended up having to stay with neighbors and friends, per her daddy’s request. But once he left, she always ended up getting out of things and finding a way to be by herself. Evergreen Acres wasn’t full of the most savory of characters and Fortune figured she was way better off without any of them. She might’ve been young but she wasn’t stupid. She had enough of the babysitting when one of the neighbor’s husband kept calling her pretty in that creepy kind of way that sent chills down her spine; even when she thinks about it now she wants to throw up her dinner.
About a week after spending a lot of time alone and becoming real good at working a microwave, Fortune’s daddy came running in like a bat out of hell and scared her half to death. Her momma wasn’t doing well and they had to leave now. On the way to the hospital, Fortune’s daddy was frantic as all get out and it scared her to death. He wasn’t driving right so she kept yelling at him to slow down. But this only made things worse. As he turned to yell at Fortune, a semi ran right into them and drove them off the road. Fortune was hospitalized in critical condition and woke up a week later to discover two tragedies had hit her family: her momma had died and she could no longer hear. After that, Fortune didn’t have much life left in her. The town didn’t have an extensive hospital unit to help people like her, and even if they did, she wouldn’t have the money to do anything about it. The only thing that kept her going was how the town had this unusual pull to just survive somehow. She wasn’t really determined to leave, seeing as it was the only place she ever knew. She slowly started to realize that this was most likely the only place she could survive and found it increasingly hard given her new-found disability.
