E-Mail Marketing Experiments

So over the last 3 weeks I wanted to test something different with our e-mail newsletters.

Most newsletters utilize the same format;

I wanted to stray away from this and kinda go in a different direction. I got the inspiration from a coworker who shared some newsletters with me from The Skimm and The Verge’s First Click.

Both newsletters have original content that lives within the email. The Verge’s First Click has a section on their site that houses all of the email original content but for now I wanted to test to see if our demographic (male, 18-24, urban) could resonate with content that just lives in their inbox. Keeping into consideration the amount of mobile users we have... ~98%!

So... cool original content idea.

Great.

Let’s do it.

Our newsletters historically have done “okay.” Definitely dropped over time but still respectable right? Double digit opens is still pretty good (out of 5,000 recipients).

Now let’s see how well we did once I implemented the original content email marketing;

NOT GOOD.

Could not for the life of me break double digit opens for some reason. It was kind of strange because the content was very similar to the posts we have on the site and topics that were relevant and “cool.” Of course headlines have a lot to do with it but we can get into that another time.

What I wanna talk about right now is what I did yesterday to try to revitalize this list. I wanted to get in the trenches and figure out what’s going on. I decided to send an email asking for feedback but this time, I stripped the email completely of any graphics or anything fancy. The only thing I did was include a merge tag of their first name to be included in the email, which historically, we have not done too often.

Email was sent just like that above. Hey first name. Plain text asking for feedback. A little emoji flair. My first name as a signature. CANSPAM regulations are abided by- always.

Oh and the subject line was the best. Strategically UNCAPITALIZED the “h” in the first word to make it seem so much more “authentic.” hah.

Now since 98% of our audience is on mobile, I sent plenty of test emails to see what it would look like on an iOS device and Android device when the email comes in, and the line would say “hey, you got a sec? hey Alex,...”

Very personal and very much like an email you’d receive from a friend... right?

This email might have seemed a little bit spammy? But, the numbers did great.

AND I received 16 email replies from people giving mostly positive feedback about our newsletter in general within the first 12hours.

So moral of the story?

If you want some feedback, don’t stress over making the greatest looking email with buttons here or buttons there, but try to send a stripped down email and see what happens! If you try this, let me know how it turns out and what kind of results you get.

Remember: Never trust someone else’s code. run your own tests and see what works for you and your needs.
