JOHANNA BRADDY AND BEAU MIRCHOFF in THE GRUDGE 3 (2009)
The Grudge 3 (2009)
The Japanese curse is still claiming victims but the original victim’s sister has come to America to try and save the next people in danger.
All the necessary elements from the original film were present like the same spirits and all the usual jump scares; however there isn’t much to set it apart or change the format of the earlier two. There are many references to the original with several moments being almost carbon copies which in a way is good because it’s being true to the original fans but it also means that there wasn’t much point making a sequel because nothing different happens.
The sister of the original victim is a key point in the narrative but her character isn’t in a great deal of it so it doesn’t feel like she was used as effectively as she could have been. One of the best scenes was actually the opening with the young boy from the second film, suggesting that it may have been more interesting to have him as one of the main protagonists as he’d have been able to convey vulnerability better than an adult.
The possibility to end the curse is really the only part which was original, although arguably the characters in the first film made an attempt despite not knowing what they were doing. It’s this potential to solve the issue altogether and the other characters resisting which creates some of the better tension aside from the simple horror kind but unfortunately it’s rather short-lived.
The ending felt somewhat conflicted because it creates the idea that becoming a vengeance spirit only requires someone to have suffered a violent death, even if the culprit wasn’t of sound mind, and they have to be Japanese, except that if that were the case then they would be swarming everywhere and it just felt like a cheap excuse to hammer in a twist ending which was disappointing.
3/10 -This one’s bad but it’s got some good in it, just there-
-This is the only film in the franchise to take place in chronological order, apart from glimpses of flashback.
-The first in the franchise to be released straight to video since the original Ju-on versions.
