Was Liz being older than Luke an AU choice in The Heart So Hollow? Because in the series she refers to him as "big brother" but other than that the continuity is sort of all over the place. (I figured they were twins, but even that doesn't quite fit).
Oh the Danes siblings. The focal point of me pulling my hair out in not one but two fics! The series super contradicts itself on their birth order, so I go with what we were given in seasons 2-4 - which all point to Liz being the older sibling and Luke the younger, but not by much.
Liz mentions in season 4 that she was in the class of 1984 (episode 4.12), and Jess was also born that year since he was 17 in the fall of 2001 (episode 2.05). Luke tells Lorelai in episode 2.05: “It was hard on all of us, but we did our part. And then the minute she graduates high school, she is outta here. Didn’t matter that my dad was sick, didn’t matter that the store was failing, she just took off. Married the hot dog king, had a kid, he left, now here we are.”
In episode 3.04, the picture of Luke in the display case shows that he won the state hurdles championship in 1985, and track & field events are in the spring. He was most likely a senior when he did that, so that would make him the class of 1985.
We know Luke is a Scorpio per episode 5.03, so he was born between October 23 and November 21. So, in my internal timeline, Luke was born in October-November 1966 and Liz was probably born 12-14 months earlier, which would put her in the class of 1984 since the school cutoff tends to be in September or so. In “The Heart So Hollow,” I just widened the age difference to 18 months. In “How to Train Your Dragonfly,” I’m avoiding any mention of sibling order altogether.
