eternal sunset more like eternal yearning. Never thought I would say this but Nagi Seishiro please stand up
I watched The Truman show for the first time today and it left me thinking about Reo, how he perceives himself and why he probably relates to Truman taking into account that it’s his favorite film.
One thing that stuck with me is the emphasis the movies does on the idolization of Truman as the star of his show. It’s unnerving and sad how so many people worldwide seem to love him through the screen; cheering at his victories, crying when they’re moved by his struggles, and always wanting to see more, more, more of him. But all this support and ‘love’ is nothing but their own expectations being placed on him since they never interact with Truman directly.
I think that’s how Reo sees himself at the start of his journey.
He used to be the star everywhere he went. Back in the Hakuho era, he always had people surrounding him and wanting to spend time with him but never getting close enough to know his authentic self. Reo without the Mikage. Just Reo. Which is why he yearns for something outside of the life that he’s been given, something that he can call his own, something real and earned through hard work. He mentions that his parents controlled every part of his life, because as the heir of Mikage Corp his role in the world was determined since the moment he was born. Just like Truman was recorded and kept in a perfectly controlled environment since he was in the womb.
Then he meets Sylvia.
And I’m not sure if she could represent —in the context of Reo— the World Cup dream or Nagi, but is there really a difference? The dream is to win the WC with Nagi.
It’s Reo’s first encounter with an anomaly; something you can’t easily buy with money and someone who’s not instantly swayed by his presence. And the problem, or the best part, is that it doesn’t align with the path his parents and the world have set for him. The first thing that moves something inside of Reo, that stirs real passion inside him.
But to achieve it he needs to break free of his mental chains. In The Truman show they physically restrain him in order to keep him in the fictional world of Seahaven, but the director himself says that “If he really wanted to be free of the cage, they wouldn’t be able to stop him” This need to change your beliefs and throw away everything you knew to chase what you want. Sylvia and the Fiji islands. The World cup and Nagi. It’s the real struggle that both Reo and Truman face in their stories.
They need to re-invent themselves, and learn to fight in a world that doesn’t revolve around them anymore. In Blue lock, Mikage Reo is no one but another diamond in the rough. In the movie, Truman is still the former star of his show but it’s a matter of time until the audience eventually forgets him and he has to live as just another guy the real world.
A world that’s harsh and difficult, and so different from everything their parents/the director had planned for them.
But it’s only there where they will finally get what they want.
IT’S HEREEEEEE

coming from a country with tropical weather, then moving to the other side of the ocean and getting used to the cold and winter and the chilly wind is so dangerous. Because then when a heat wave hits, everyone’s complaining and saying it’s so hot, but when I do it there’s a little voice in my head telling me I am a disgrace to my bloodline
