Hello! Do you have a faq or beginners guide to Irish Polytheism? I'm worried about reading false/misleading info as I start my research. Thank you!
I’m in the process of working on The Guide to Gaelic Polytheism, which includes Irish Polytheism!
Under the “How To’s” there’s the “How to Start” article.
Some quick advice involving resources: avoid the authors “Edain McCoy” and “Robert Grave”. Be wary of any source that cites them (and check bibliographies for sources whenever possible!) (Stories will most likely not include bibliographies but other things should.) The Caitlin and John Matthews are iffy sources -- the two of them have some foundation in the academics but they like to get whimsical about things and not state clearly they’re being whimsical.
There are a lot of different versions of the myths, so I like to read as many versions as possible. Myths and folklore will change and that’s okay! One thing to keep in mind is that if you come across any “Creation Myth” as to how the world came to be... It’s modern. There’s no pre-Christian Creation Myth in Gaelic Polytheism, though some people have put forward myths in the modern era.
I hope this helps! I think today I’ll try to work on adding more resources to the Guide that I linked above, because I think it’s lacking in mentioning some resources.
