Gu Jun Pyo (LEE MIN-HO) became jealous at a formal event and went outside furious that the girl he has become enamored Guem Jan Di (GU HYE SEON) was dolled up and was dancing with F4 member and Jun Pyo's best friend Ji Hoo.
Now in the Korean Adaptation Jun Pyo had a fear of bugs I mean an over the top fear. Seeing a cricket by the pool he freaked out and fell in the pool.
Jan Di happened by and extracted him from the pool and began CPR and suddenly Jun Pyo sprung awake (he was faking) and tried kissing Jan Di. She decked him. Yet he still seemed oh so happy.
But Jan Di doesn't like Jun Pyo (yet) she's still hung up on Ji Hoo (KIM HYUN JOONG)
A shout out to one of my favorite stories from Yoko Kamio (MANGA/ANIME)
Several countries have brought there own version of this story. I'm sure fans have their favorites. But I have an appreciation for all these actors and their version of DOMYOUJI TSUKUBA. So here they are..
Number 1: Made into a movie in Japan in 1995, this version isn't as popular. It did not follow the full story of the trials and tribulations gone through by Domyoji & Makino. But it had its own charm. Domyoji Tsukuba was played by SHOSUKE TANIHARA
Number 2: The first series in live action went to Taiwan. In 2001 it went from Hana Yori Dango to Meteor Garden. It was followed by a sequel Meteor Garden 2 after Meteor Rain. Domyouji Tsukuba name was changed to Daoming Si and Taiwanese dynamo JERRY YAN step into this iconic role.
Number 3: Japan decided to step back into the game with a series version that blew the 1995 movie out of the water. Back to the original name HANA YORI DANGO (aka BOYS OVER FLOWERS) it was 2005. A sequel in 2007 called HANA YORI DANGO RETURNS and a final movie in 2008. Domyouji Tsukuba was played by multi-talented JUN MATSUMOTO.
Number 4: Then it was SOUTH KOREA next. BOYS OVER FLOWERS came out in 2009. Domyouji Tsukuba became GU JUN-PYO. And was played by popular South Korean actor LEE MIN-HO.
Number 5: Another Remake with a much milder story but still damn good IMO. Once again the name changed to Meteor Garden as China did a remake of the Taiwanese version. And of course Domyouji Tsukuba became Daoming Si again. And newbie actor DYLAN WANG took on the role. And he was A M A Z I N G!!
In conclusion this is an iconic story and will probably will continue to be remade with a new name for Domyouji and his lady love Makino and the rest of the F4. But no matter what I will always have an appreciation for the characters. I may not like every version but I won't slam it. I just won't watch it.
For fans who choose to diminish these men and their outstanding performance by saying BEST ADAPTATION YET for their favorite is ridiculous. One is not better than the other. They are all BEST ADAPTATIONS. Each actor brought their best. And should be applauded. Each version should appreciated.
So to all the men here that played DOMYOUJI or DAOMING SI or GU JUN-PYO. YOU DID MARVELOUSLY ALL OF YOU.
@pose4photoml I posted this a long time ago. Just tagging you to check it out.
That ending...(Boys over Flowers spoilers but like...it’s been 9 years soooo I’ve legit just jumped on the bandwagon XD)
The Boys over Flowers ending was actually perfect I mean what... I can’t with this beautiful friendship thing they’ve got going on...
Also, I love the F4 friendship with a passion but the real best friendship has to be Ji-hoo, Yi-jung, Woo-bin and Jan-di...it’s like them being there for her even when she kept quiet about her struggles and watching the pain she feels whenever Jun-pyo did something wrong...like it made more sense for them to be standing next to Jan-di than Jun-pyo at times??? They’re all just great and any time it was a situation where Jun-pyo was a mad idiot, and the three confronted him or did something for Jan-di’s without ever even considering how they were originally only connected to her through Jun-pyo just makes me feel all warm and wonderful inside... like any scene where it’s just them 4 is great... or even with the addition of Ga-Eul...just, the time they played hide and seek and toured around Macau, or when they saved Jan-di in Macau...or the time they held a retirement ceremony for Jan-di knowing she needed a proper end to that part of her life...the time YI-JUNG got mad on her behalf towards Jun-pyo...ughhhhhh so amazing...friendship goals...
Like that whole end episode where that one chick was actually the only character I’ve ever actually disliked on the show because she literally showed up for half a second and then started imposing herself like she was at all relevant and I was out here like who the eff does she think is?!?! Of course they don’t like you, they don’t know you and you’re here acting like you’ve known Jun-pyo longer than them when you know NOTHING of the situation gaddamn...it was kinda hilarious how she literally just disappeared after Jun-pyo recovered his memory...
But anyway the point of that rant was that the F3 (F4 - Jun-pyo) stayed by Jan-di’s side and were firmly on her side and knew that this girl was only causing trouble and didnt encourage any shit from her and it was so cute...and that bit where they went to a graduation that legit had nothing to do with them just because their favourite girl was there so they could dance with her...
And then of course the ending where they actually objected to Jun-pyo’s proposal and said he had to get permission from them first...like Jan-di is everyones Jan-di! You want her hand, you need to get approval from her best friends!
Would pay big money to have a scene where they take turns walking her down the aisle??? Like obv the dad would be first but then I would love to see the F3 demonstrate they are not just Jun-pyo’s groomsmen but Jan-di’s best men... and possibly have Ji-hoo be the last one as a final “giving away”....that kind of symbolism is kinda amazing but just my personal headcanon...exceptionally heartbreaking though...
And speaking of, even til the very end Ji-hoo was still in love with her???? This incredible wonderful guy who friggen knew her first was still supporting her but watching after her even after basically proposing to her and getting rejected???? He friggen attended medical school and offered to repeat a year for her?!?! All because he still loved her?!?! It completely came true the whole “your husband and soulmate are two different people” prophecy she dreamed about that one time...and like both Ji-hoo and Jan-di felt it (hell she straight up said it!!!) that they were soulmates but because of some effed up timing, Jan-di couldn’t stop her love for Jun-pyo which just...I like him he’s fine and the love is real but dammit my second lead syndrome has never EVER been this strong before...EVER... >///<
Also they just sorta ignore the fact that in some form, Jan-di had a hand in reviving their father like what y’all are just gonna skim over that????? ALSO I WANTED MORE GA-EUL AND YI-JUNG YALL JUST END IT LIKE SOME SORT OF IMPLIED THING WHAT?!?!?! THEY NEVER ACTUALLY KISSED NO WONDER ALL THE GIFS ARE INCOMPLETE!!!!!
Also also can we just appreciate Chief/Secretary Jung/Jeong??? He is actually the best...friggen out here like a real one supporting everybody gaddamn he’s my favourite...AND THERE WAS NO MASTER!!! THEY NEVER FULLY UNVEILED WHAT WAS GOING ON BETWEEN HIM AND FORMER GRANDPA PRESIDENT AND ALL THOSE TIMES HE CAME TO THE PORRIDGE SHOP?!?!?!
My first kdrama and I can sense the obsession sinking in...gaddammit...
Jan-di gos to Shin Hwa High School, a private school for the most wealthy. Enter F4, four very rich, powerful and handsome guys (debatable), which rule over Shin Hwa High!! Oh and then the leader (Gu Jun-pyo) slowly falls in love with Jan-di.
(This is Ji-hoo my fave btw)
SPOILERS BELOW!!!!
I was so sad that Jan-di's initial character of being against the systematic bullying and also standing up what was right slowly be side-lined by the series. I especially liked the beginning where Jan-di stopped a boy's suicide. It shows us immediately what sort of person she was. She's kind, doesn't succumb to peer pressure and is hard-working. I really hated that Jan-di had to lose her love of swimming because of Jun-pyo. Afterall, the chair got thrown at him and she threw herself in front of him so he wouldn't get hurt. But I'm glad that she realized that she wanted to help people and she's becoming a doctor at the end of the season.
I think that Ji-hoo should have ended up with Jan-di. She called him her soulmate, yet she didn't fall for him. I think that if Ji-hoo didn't go to France to go after Min Seo Hyun, they would have ended up together. I thought that it was really sweet, because despite Jan-di having a crush on Ji-hoo initially, she let him go and to be honest, she and I weren't expecting him to come back.
Even when Ji-hoo knew that Jan-di had a crush on Gu Jun-pyo, he always was there for her. For example, when he purposely enticed Jun-pyo to fight him at the ice hockey rink because he wanted to make sure that Jun-pyo was angry at him and not at Jan-di for the kiss at the island resort, or when Jan-di went to Macau to find Jun-pyo and Ji-hoo was too restless to let her go by herself, so he secretly went with the rest of F4, and even when Jan-di tells Jun-pyo's mom that she'll leave Jun-pyo alone, Ji-hoo is the first to find her. He literally encourages her not to give up Jun-pyo, and I think that he knew that when he confessed, he would get rejected. Gosh, I love him so much. My friend said that he was basically emotionless, but I think that Jan-di always brought him out of his shell, like when she had to stay at his house and she helped him wash his car, she started playing with the water and fighting him. The Ji-hoo + Jan-di dance moment was so cute too, she looked so happy dancing with him. I loved the scene where Ji-hoo made a swimming award to commemorate Jan-di's love of swimming, but also to signal the end of an era for Jan-di, so that she could (sadly), find a new love for something.
I hate Gu Jun-pyo. He's selfish and aggressive and super annoying. I started hating him during the arc where he was planning to kick Ji-hoo and Jan-di out of Shin Hwa High and his noona stepped in and told them to figure it out via three competitions (horse back riding/car racing/swimming). When Jun-pyo got frustrated during racing practice, he threw a fit and fired all of the people who had worked on his car. Moreover, when he won the horse back race, he literally over exhausted his horse to the point where it can no longer properly race again. Even after that arc, when he was going to marry Ha Jae-kyung, when he saw the wedding invite, he ripped it up. When he's angry, he's so violent. And you're telling me that when he's in a "good" mood (aka w/Jan-di), he won't be violent??? That's so silly.
I really hated the lack of communication between Jan-di andJun-pyo too. For example, when Jan-di and Ga Eul were on a double date with Gu Jun-pyo and a guy who was only pretending to be interested in Ga Eul, the only reason why Jun-pyo beats up that scummy guy, not because he cared about Ga Eul (Jan-di's best friend, mind you), because he badmouthed Jan-di. And then when Jan-di confronts Jun-pyo, he refuses to tell her why he beat up that guy and it's up to her to find out why, which she finds out coincidentally when she overheards the scummy guy badmouthing Ga Eul later. And at the end, where Jun-pyo loses his memory, Jan-di doesn't tell him that she's his girlfriend, in fact she just looks wistful and sad right until the end where finally, oh gosh I love her personality, she jumps into the swimming pool dramatically and that's how he regains his memory.
Ah, also the reason why he started liking Jan-di was a bit silly to me - this girl is rebelling and tells you that she hates you and you take it as a sign that she does like you? And then he kidnaps her and dresses her up and he still doesn't understand that she doesn't like her? That's harassment oh my gosh. Also the moment where he tries to force a kiss onto Jan-di. Like, no. Don't do that. He was still pretty cute when he waited, like four hours in the snow for Jan-di for their first date though. I thought that was endearing, also the moments where he was spending time with Jan-di's family and wanted to do it again, also when he learnt how to swim for Jan-di's sake.
I really liked how Gu Jun-hee (Gu Jun-pyo's older sister), encouraged him to persue Jan-di. Also, I feel like Jun-hee and Min Seo Hyun should get together (Min Seo Hyun is Ji-hoo's first crush).
Song Woo-bin didn't have much of a backstory and was semi-sidelined for the rest of the F4 boys, I think. Aside from the fact that he is the son of a mafia boss and also, So Yi-jeong has helped him realize that F4 still very much like him. And he pinned Woo-bin to the car, so I think that Woo-bin is gay, coupled with the fact that Woo-bin beat up a guy who had injured Yi-jeong's hand.
So Yi-jeong, I felt really bad for him. He didn't want to end up like his dad, but because he didn't know how to deal with his emotions, he ended up like his dad to protect himself. With the help of Ga Eul and his first love, I think he steadily learnt that it was time to accept himself. I see him as bisexual!!
I loved the initial episodes, where we saw Jan-di's family cheer for Jan-di. I loved especially how there was a culture of "Fighting!" where they'd use the catch phrase to cheer each other on. So lovely. I crave that.
