Look, Spirit can't speak much to the crisis of gun violence and mass murder in this country. She doesn't possess the capability for that much nuance — or enough empathy, and not enough rationality to boot. All she knows is the world that she lives in — and in that world, to arm yourself is almost necessary.

"We should do something else for Valentine's, though. Something that's an actual celebration. Not just — going to the Wal-Mart or whatever man in the alley sold you that thing. — I think I have an idea."

What is a certifiable New York girl to do on the west coast if not constantly find ways back to the east? She is bored of Harris’s extended business trip, bored of having nothing dangerous to do — and a bit overwhelmed out of her natural environment. 

She makes few friends, but Lupe is one. 

“I can help you, you know.” 

Who knows what Lupe has revealed thus far about her family, about her desire for reunion? All that can be said is that Spirit probably knows more than she should. 

“With your parents. I’ll be impossibly jealous, but I do want to help.”
