WikiLeaks: Julian Assange Sentenced to Nearly One Year in Prison in Britain
The founder of WikiLeaks was sentenced to 50 weeks in prison for violating the conditions of his provisional release, nearly three weeks after his arrest. The court decision fell late morning. Julian Assange, the founder of Wikileaks, will have to serve a 50-week prison term for violating the terms of his parole in 2012. The sentence, pronounced by the London court of Southwark, comes nearly three weeks after his arrest at Ecuadorian Embassy in London. The 47-year-old Australian had taken refuge there in order to avoid his extradition to Sweden, where he was suspected of rape. But he had claimed to have evaded British justice for fear of ending up in the United States, who accuse him of "hacking". A theory reiterated Wednesday by his lawyer Mark Summers.
