Multilingualism in Gauteng province, South Africa.

Gauteng, South Africa's smallest, yet most populous province (~13m) is located at a unique meeting point of several major South African languages. The linguistic areas of the N. Sotho, S. Sotho, Zulu, Ndebele and Tswana all meet at this central area, coupled with a large white, asian and coloured population (bringing in English and Afrikaans) as well as black migration which has brought Tsonga and Venda. Altogether, Gauteng represents all 11 official languages in this single province.

Sidenotes:

Apologies if town and city names cover up the linguistic areas, I tried not to cover it up too much but retain some settlement names.

Settlement name sizes do not correspond to actual city size (ie Nigel is not bigger than Heidelberg).

Statistically the 3 largest languages in the province are Zulu (17.8%), English (14.3%) and Afrikaans (13.8%).
