On this Day
Puppeteer, illustrator, and animator Tony Sarg (Frederick Anthony Sarg) was born in 1880 in Guatemala to a German and English couple. Sarg married in Ohio in 1909 and became a U.S. citizen in 1920. Always a lover of puppetry, he was able to turn his passion into a profession. In 1928 he designed giant balloon animals for a predecessor of Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade and in the early 1930s he was heavily involved in puppet productions for the 1933 Chicago World's Fair. Above is an foldout pictorial map by Sarg depicting various Manhattan sites and exhibits for the 1939 New York World's Fair. From the Collection at the Queens Museum.
