CALICOAN ODYSSEY WAVES 2023

Here goes the 13th Odyssey Waves in Calicoan, Guiuan Eastern Samar. 🎉

This is an annual event happening for 13 years. This is to promote the tourism of Guiuan Eastern Samar. Different surfers from different places around the world came to visit here.

They have food stalls here, stores for clothes, anklets, temporary tattoos, and other surfing essentials.

It was actually my first time to go to the 13th Odyssey Waves in Calicoan. It's mesmerizing to see a lot of surfers at the sea and a lot of people whose skin is tanned. As the sun touches my skin it made me feel relieved, as if it's my first time. The ambiance is different. It's completely fun and an adventure. If only I know how to surf I would be surfing all day long. Now that I saw and felt how its like, I promise myself that someday I will learn how to surf.

      Where almost everything that happened was unforgettable, only few things struck as memorable. 

     I have a soft heart for beaches but never did I think that a cave will make my heart skip a beat. I like silence. However, the silence of the way to there was very deafening. I don’t know why but I am that kind of person who doesn’t want to be in tightly fit places; and when I imagined being inside the cave, it gave me the feeling of being confined. It was true that I was not really excited to go there and as we went nearer and nearer, I just become more nervous. It turned out that the cave and lagoon experience open up another opportunity to face my fears and get through them. I was in awe of the surroundings. I got to experience something adventurous with the people I never thought would have special places in my heart.

     The world truly has been focusing only on the front side of the world. However, the generation of the modern time explored all its sides and got to see that there is more beauty that you can find if you will not just focus on one portion. The Samar Island can offer many beauties that can be a source of pride, not just by Eastern Visayas, but of the entire Philippines. If only these beautiful places will be developed and be given the importance they should have, tourism in the Philippines will be golden. Guiuan is just one of the many promising places in Samar. The town is already shining and it can shine even brighter—if only its light gleam will be fueled.

One Last Run in Guiuan

On my last full day in Guiuan, I visited a beach and did some running along it. The view was so beautiful that it was distracting, but it felt so good to be running though lovely scenery. The cliffs and gentle waves made for a refreshing and exhilarating experience.

Guiuan Breakfast

Today I started the day with some black coffee and then some freshly fried doughnuts. The doughnuts were made simply with flour and yeast.Both were delicious, and we’re followed by an overwhelming amount of food at Tonet’s family’s home.

Weather Station Climb

Today we visited the weather station in Guiuan, which had us climbing a steep hill to an impressive building with an equally impressive view. The station was rebuilt in the wake of a major typhoon, Yolanda through cooperation of Japan and the Philippines.
