This game was so much fun

And it did what Red Dead Redemption did before RDR was a thing, a story driven open world western.

I mean, hell. This game came out a year after Red Dead Revolver. I liked both games, but between the two this was the superior one, the voice acting was phenomenal, I mean you have Thomas Jane, Ron Pearlman, Kris Kristofferson, and Brad Dourif who absolutely nailed it as the mad preacher.

I also like that the game was based on real life locations like Doge City, and some of the people were based on real historical figures as well

Clay Allison was an actual gun fighter and Confederate army veteran who had a run in with Wyatt Earp, his epitaph reads “He never killed a man that did not need killing”

Hoodoo Brown was also real, the leader of the Dodge City gang, he also became a coroner and a mayor after winning an election for justice of the peace. He was as corrupt as the game portrays him.

Soapy was based on Soapy Smith, con artist and gangster.

There was so much love and attention to detail put into this game, and Activision has shown they can release an open world western shooter that could rival today’s Red Dead. It’s just unfortunate they’re contented on beating the dead horse of their cash cow call of duty.

But then maybe that’s a good thing considering the direction and lack of vision the company has been putting on display these past several years.

But if they really wanted to impress their consumers and the gaming industry as a whole they’d release another banger of a western, hell I’d accept a remake that remained faithful to the original, maybe even add in some of the cut content that had to be removed due to time constraints. There was supposed to be an entire new region to explore in Mexico where the final standoff with Magruder was supposed to take place.

So, today I watched a full gameplay of this game because everyone said it was both a Red Dead Revolver clone and a spiritual predecessor to Red Dead Redemption. Decided to make a review. Will put it below the cut. There are spoilers.

Gun (2005) Review

Okay, first of all, Red Dead Revolver came out a year before this game. I can see that game being used as inspiration - specially with the main character being half-native. Gun, however, is way more polished, and despite having more or less the same gameplay time, packed a more dense and rich plot.

I thought it was pretty racist, just because it could be. It almost feels like an excuse, that since it was the old wild west and everyone was saying slurs and killing mexicand and native and asians, that it could do just that without consequence, and just go "it's real life, suck it up". In addition, there were only two female characters, who die very early, after very little screen time.

It also used it as an excuse to perpetuate some stereotypes, such as the mystic native. Spoilers again. Colton could speak Apache and Blackfoot just because he was born Apache, and because at some point in his life, was healed by a Blackfoot medicine man. And the main motivation of the villain, and by proxy, Colton's, was to find Quivera, a lost city of gold.

The game isn't entirely tone deaf, however. You start out killing Natives and Mexicans for white men, but it's revealed soon enough that said white men were untrustworthy and corrupt. From that moment on, you ally yourself to Mexicans, Apaches, Blackfeet and a Chinese man, taking their side and protecting them, and they are portrayed as the real heroes of the story. The game explicitly tells you that you've made up for all the Apache you killed in the bridge level, when, in the train level, you free a bunch of Apache slaves and they forgive your debt - very much an eye for an eye situation. Also worth noting one of the characters who helped free those slaves is a former Confederate.

It's not intuitive that Colton would've done the same, allied himself to the POC of the setting, if he wasn't following his own agenda in his journey for revenge. But it's also true the journey isn't framed as revenge, as much as settling a debt, so Colton's parents (including Ned, who raised him as his own) could rest. It's apparent that he becomes a friend to Many Wounds and the Apache tribe at the end.

Atmosphere-wise, the game felt more like a true western than any others I'd ever known. The cutscenes were extremely cinematic - which at some points contrasted to how cheesy the gameplay itself was - and the dialogue and character animations evoked that of a classic western movie. The soundtrack was awesome and satisfying, and I admit I have added it to my playlists. Not only that, but the voice-acting was stellar. I realized mid-game that Colton was voiced by Thomas Jane, who I consider a very good actor and who also played Blorbo from My Shows.

I can see how this game, maybe moreso than Red Dead Revolver, went on to inspire the gameplay and cinematic aspects of Red Dead Redemption especially regarding the horse riding, sidequests and authority figure characters.

So I find myself wondering if this game, in all it's racism, isn't the kind that still accidentally ends up making a good point of acceptance, underneath all it's insensitive language and slur use. Recognizing that message, however, falls onto the player rather than anyone else.
