The ongoing discussion of guns and a wonderful performance piece tonight at The loft at Liz's! #guncontro #gunsandartists #lizgordon (at The Loft at Liz's)
just needed to rant
What happened today in Orlando was a tragedy. This morning, over 100 families got the news that will permanently change their lives. Yesterday, a singer was shot while signing autographs for her fans. This week alone, we have already had 7 mass shootings. Something is wrong.
In a time like this, the necessity of stricter gun control laws is crucial. We need to remember all those that died today--and have died before them because of the lack of gun safety we have currently in our country. Looking at Twitter, I quickly became frustrated reading the supposed defense that exists behind continuing to protect guns.
“Guns don’t kill people, people kill people”
Yes, obviously an inanimate gun doesn’t have the capacity to murder anyone, but people that cite this argument are missing the point. Guns give people, who wouldn’t necessarily have the capacity to murder, especially multiple individuals, the opportunity to do so. Guns make it easier for people to commit murder and forever change a families life within a matter of minutes.
“If guns are really that bad, criminals will just go around stricter laws and find them illegally”
Admittedly, black markets exist. And sure, if guns were made completely illegal, it’s not difficult to see why some fear some criminals finding a way to access guns. But if gun control prevents even one mass murder from occurring, one less individual purchasing a gun, the lives saved outweigh any potential harms. The idea that something *might* still happen doesn't mean it’s morally ok to ignore the problem.
“The Second Amendment gives me the right to bear arms!”
You’re right, it does. But what I’m, like many others in this country, are advocating for is stricter background checks, not removing guns from individuals all together. Your rights are still protected, even if it means a little more works goes into purchasing a gun.
