He was coming down the hallway. You shut the door quietly as possible with shaking hands, the soft click of the handle ringing in your ears.
Your breathing was uneven and you couldn’t steady it at all. You looked up around the small office noticing the glaring fluorescent lights in the ceiling; turn them off.
Rushing to the light switches and hastily slamming your hands over them caused a thud against the wall, and you froze. Could he hear it? Damnit, you needed to stop being frantic.
But how could you not be frantic? Your hands trembled while hiding in the dark office.
When you saw him outside of your building far off in the distance, you were pleasantly surprised. It was a late night for you workwise and he’d called earlier that morning to say he'd miss you.
He missed me. He came to walk me home after work. A smile spread across your mouth just before you waved at him, but he stopped walking and stood still. It was too dark and the street lights only illuminated patches of the sidewalk.
You frowned; what is he doing?
“Aki!” you called out.
You squinted at the darkened shadow he was hiding in. You made a mistake; Looks like he has both arms. That’s not him.
But he started his pace again and it was faster than before. Each time he passed under a streetlight, you saw the shine of something on his face. Your thoughts raced; that’s not him. His quick strides towards you were unsettling and you made a sharp turn back to your work entrance.
Inside you felt a temporary relief, thinking you were safe. Your keys jingled in your hand while you backed slowly into the reception desk, staring out the glass window. He was almost to the front.
It’s locked. He won’t try to get in.
The tall figure slowed his pace while examining the building; the overhead lights shined brightly in a pool just outside the doors. As he stepped into the light and you could see he had a gun. The fear of seeing the large weapon quickly turned to sheer terror when you saw his face. This isn't a man.
You gripped your keys painfully, wide eyed with fear.
He gently tapped the tip of the barrel jutting from his face against the glass door. Tck. tck. tck.
And grinned.
Tck.
The black hair hanging over his face was stringy; pieces stuck to the corner of his bloodied mouth.
Crying, you ran to the stairwell, unsure of where you were going but hoping for an escape.
Now you’re locked in this office with no apparent way out…except the way you came. There’s no phone in here. You hid in a vacant office that hadn’t been used in months. Fuck. There are no windows in here either. No. You crawl under the desk and tuck your knees to your chest.
The handle jiggled and you held your breath. A few more turns; back and forth, and the door shook loudly before it was still again. The veins in your neck bulged while you held your breath desperately out of fear.
BANG
You screamed and covered your head as he pushed the door open, creaking steadily.
You could hear the rubber soles of his sneakers walking across the linoleum floor toward the desk. He knew you were there and you couldn’t help but cry. He’s got you.
With you shaking underneath, he leaned over the top and rested on his arm as the other scraped across the laminate desk. You couldn't see him, but you could hear his twisted smile click in your ears just before slurring: I missed you.
