I felt connected to Esperanza in The House on Mango Street, by Sandra Cisneros, because like her, I have not always lived where I do now. Esperanza says, “We didn’t always live on Mango Street. Before that we lived on Loomis on the third floor, and before that we lived on Keeler. Before Keeler it was Pauline, and before that I can’t remember.” I don’t remember the first house that I live in, either, because I was only 2 years old when we moved from it. Each house that I have live in created part of my identity. My first house was in Titusville, Florida on Eads Ct. I was lived there from when I was born until I was 2 years old. I am a Florida boy, and I like the beach. The salt water and sand are where I come from. We then moved to Fredericksburg, Virginia on Rubin’s Walk. I loved it here. My identity as friend was formed because I met my best friend, Jeffry here. I got my loving dog, Triskit here and he is with me still. Some of my happiest memories are from there. When I was 5 we moved to Bel Air, Maryland on Henderson Manor Ct. I started school and my identity as student was started. I had a lot of friends there and I spent many hours outside running and playing. It was there that I started becoming athletic and stared playing soccer, baseball. I love running outside and that created the idea to join cross-county one day. When I was in 5th grade we had to move from the house that I loved into a townhouse on Emmy Dee Drive, still in Bel Air. Like Esperanza, “this is the house that I belong but do not belong to.” We are renting and were never sure when we would move from here, so I don’t feel like I belong to this house. We are looking for a house to buy now and I hope to further my identity there. Each house that I have lived in has contributed to my identity in different ways and helped shape me into who I am today. I created a Prezi to show each of the houses that I have lived in. I found a picture of each house and scanned them into the computer. I uploaded them to Prezi and added the captions. I was inspired to create this to show the different houses that I live in, like all the houses Esperanza lived in. I used Literacy RL 9-10.1, cite strong textual evidence, to include quotes from the book and use them to back up my points. I used ELA Literacy W 9-10.1E, providing a concluding statement, to support and restate my ideas. I used conventions of standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling, demonstrating ELA Literacy. L.9-10.2
