Groovy: that’s the first word that came to mind when I pressed play on Eden Rain’s new single, “Crumb.” Personal and distinctive, the track is reminiscent of some of the greatest names in music, yet manages to stand on its own and avoid comparison. In short, “Crumb” feels genius.
The emphasis on bass and percussion paired with Eden’s voice, crooning comfortably in her lower register, create a spiky yet upbeat vibe. It perfectly carries the lyrical content, allowing her to follow the percussion with each syllable. “My nerves are currency I traded to be loved by men,” she laments, detailing a relationship that seems to be largely one-sided; she works hard for attention, yet feels ignored. “I pulled these stunts for all these months / I crawled for miles for just a touch,” she shares in the song.
“I don’t remember much about the songwriting process,” Eden wrote in a comic posted on Instagram before the track’s release. “It all flowed so easily. I got my notebooks out and wrote something about begging for the bare minimum from someone you love. Begging for crumbs…”
Eden Rain is no stranger to unveiling her innermost thoughts and feelings in her music. Her previous single “Bed (For A Year)” detailed a story of depression and anxiety, of not wanting to get up and face the world. It’s fitting that Eden’s upcoming EP, Gutter Vision, out May 19, will express the “stormier, spikier” side of her rather than a polished version that doesn’t exist. “I definitely want to feel like the first me rather than a copy of someone else,” she shared. “If people can resonate more with me being real than me being a glossy, put together version of me, then that sounds way more appealing.”
