Tell me not to
That tabletop idea sounds cool, but there's some crazy strong benders in Gladiator who you should make hard to get, or rare or however you set it up, like Combustion Dude, or Azula, or maybe have them super hard to beat unless you have a "Hard counter" character who's their foil. Like Sokka has a special buff called "Remove Shirt." That he can only activate against Azula to completely disarm her and inflicts a long term stun or hypnosis that converts her to his side and can't be resisted.
Well, Combustion Man outright CAN’T be obtained, he’s the big boss to defeat. Azula wouldn’t be that difficult to obtain, if you’re luck you can draw her in the initial selection of characters... and she’s pretty much the luckiest draw you could have, yeah. Whether as a sponsor or a gladiator, she’s a powerhouse and she’ll absolutely give any starting player a good advantage.
But... she’s not going to be Gladiator-levels of OP right away, you see. My idea is to have each character with starting stats that can be improved upon by buying upgrades (basically, every gladiator you defeat yields money, you can use that money to improve your main gladiator into being way tougher). So, if you were to draw Azula as a gladiator, but you don’t upgrade her AT ALL and go up against Combustion Man? Yeah you’ll just get Azula killed. Sad, horrible, but true.
Each character is different, so each one would have inherent abilities that benefit them as sponsors or as gladiators. They’d also have specific relationship benefits or disadvantages (for instance, if Katara is partnered with a Fire Nation character she’ll ALWAYS start with a -50 relationship and fixing that will take you twice as much work as starting off from 0 with most other characters :’D). Now, special attacks against particular gladiators would be hilarious, though difficult to implement... but, if I may, it’s not merely shirtless Sokka but hair-down Sokka (?) Put forward that attack on an enemy Azula and she’s DOOMED. I don’t make the rules. okay I do but that’s Gladiator-canon since chapter 14 sooooo...
There’s still a lot of dynamics that need tweaking, but rest assured, I’ve pondered many things, such as not making our dearest Princess too OP from the get-go. For instance, Xin Long would function as a mount that provides his team with extra power, and he’d be especially useful if partnered up with firebenders (probably extra useful with Azula :’D), BUT... Xin Long coming into play at all would depend exclusively on who draws the “found a dragon in a cave!” random event card. If your Azula doesn’t draw it; if, for instance, OZAI DRAWS IT??? Then as long as Ozai rolls the right number to tame the dragon, woops, you’ve got Ozai and Xin Long partnered up and that’d be horrible :’D but it means Azula doesn’t get to be as OP as she very much is in Gladiator, and it means other characters can get big upgrades too if they beat her to them... so the playing field should be a lot more even than meets the eye right away.
