Chapter 1: Greed covered in blood.

There are flames, fragmented memories, and bitter feelings. But amid the vastness of the fire there is a redheaded boy whose heart Mickey recognizes without fear. When you're touching the end with your hands, you can either let yourself fall or look your life in the eyes for the first time. Mickey's shame is knowing that he has loved. And they say that only love can cheat death.

But Mickey knew he could be disarmed, so he kept that certainty deep inside and screamed at the world that nothing could bring him down. It had only taken a redheaded boy, with a smile too big and quick hands, to make him fall completely. Without realizing it, he was filling his nails with dirt, digging deep to find the sensitivity to life.

It was the first time Mickey had felt real terror. All the moments when his father had left him breathless from hitting the ribs too hard —none of them had even been associated with fear. Because having himself was something he had to carry like a shameful, malfunctioning disguise. He didn't care enough about his own life. But now he had Ian, and the only life that mattered was his. Mickey could burn entire cities just to keep the blood running through his veins.

But the fear didn't come from the root —it came from the flower that would sprout from the earth to be reflected in the world. And still, he scratched the walls and tore out Ian's scent so he wouldn't find it again. Ian always ended up by his side like a cursed magnetism. So the flower grew anyway until it swallowed him, and ended up germinating others in the soles of his shoes.

Ian. Mickey lifted his head and saw the formed back of the boy in front of him, just a few steps away. He could recognize the tension in his muscles by the way he moved, the kind of expression hanging on his face right now. The speed at which his heart moved inside the chest. It was strange to know he'd learned so much about Ian's existence that he'd settled into it like a second skin.

TW: There are references and explicit suicidal thoughts about the past and present in relation to Mickey. Mentions of blood, murder and death in relation to the victims themselves. Also lots of body descriptions. Please do not read if these are topics that may affect you. This story will deal with them regularly.
