The Trump Administration is quickly moving forward with their plan to open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil and gas development. Not only is this one of the last wild places on earth but, it is sacred land to the Gwich’in. As Traditional Chief of Arctic Village, Trimble Gilbert, said, “We treat caribou and other creatures with reverence because, without them, we would not survive…To my people, wilderness is not a luxury or indulgence. It is a necessity. We feed our families and sustain our culture by living on the land, taking only what we need, and caring for our clean air, clean water and abundant wildlife.” The next step in the permitting process is suddenly upon us. Yesterday, BLM announced the public meeting schedule regarding the EIS draft, the first is starting Monday - February 4, Fairbanks. February 5, Kaktovik. February 6, Utqiagvik. Meet Bernadette, a proud Gwich’in, environmental activists and beautiful human. This week, Congress plans to fast track drilling in the Arctic Refuge by using special rules in the budget process. This bill will allow drilling in an area that is not only sacred to the Gwich'in Steering Committee but is the birthing grounds of the Porcupine Caribou Herd, which comprises 80% of people's food source. This is a food justice issue! The Gwich'in are already impacted by climate change, with their lands thawing at 3 times the rate they used to.
